I cant see red border on the images i import as canvas

i am leraning to make a car body on fusion 360 but once i click on import the red borders is gone
that is not gone in the vedio but when i import it its gone once i click ok
and that is very important for desigining plus i am using the same images that are been used in the vedios please need help asap

Based on my understanding, you are trying to follow a video. Could you please let us know which video you are referring to?

You mentioned that when you import an image as a canvas, you can't see the red border around the image. You should normally see the red border when you are in edit mode of Canvas.

Additionally, could you please share the image you are using? This will help us determine if the issue is with the image itself or if it might be a bug.

As far as I'm concerned:

In Fusion 360, the red border around your image is only the edit box that shows while placing or scaling a canvas; once you click OK it disappears, but the image stays in place, and you can bring the border back anytime by right-clicking the canvas in the Browser and choosing Edit Canvas to move or resize it again.

Unless the photo has a red border already in it, you shouldn't be seeing one.

Could I request that you provide the YouTube tutorial and photos so myself and other members of this forum can replicate your issue, and because I want to verify whether your YouTube tutorial was made by a "cowboy" (please refer to Fusion rule 0).

Additionally, this isn't my business and I'm making dumb assumptions by asking if your new to Fusion

because of the new member title because I know that's false because it only says new member when you start using the forum even if you've used Fusion for years, but if your learning Fusion, I would advice you to go through the basics first and learn with the included Fusion help documents that are integrated with the Fusion app or a Good YouTube channel like product design: Learn Fusion 360 in 30 days or some of our own forum's YouTube channels, like Peter Doering or TheCadWhisperer.( Please refer to Fusion rule 1) and I'm sure @Drewpan would be happy to copy paste his essay on learning fusion the right way because I have unfortunately lost my copy of his essay.

thanks for the reply

just to clarify im not talking about sketches its the canvas image i’m
using as a reference

i know the red border is supposed to show when placing or editing the
canvas but for some reason i can’t see it at all

on the videos i watch people use that border to resize and align their
reference images perfectly which makes it way easier to model over them

but since i can’t see the border i can’t adjust the image properly and that
makes it really hard to get things lined up right

i’ve tried right clicking the canvas in the browser and doing edit canvas
but still nothing shows up

not sure if it’s a setting or display issue but it’s pretty frustrating
because this step is key for the build

if you or anyone else has seen this before and can point me in the right
direction that’d be a big help

i can share the tutorial links if needed

thanks for getting back

yeah i can see the red border when i’m inside edit canvas mode but the
second i click ok it disappears

i want to keep seeing it even after i finish editing because it helps me
line up my sketches and stay accurate while building the car body

i know i’m not 3d printing this or anything this is just a practice project
to learn how to model a car body in fusion

i’ll send over the images i’m using so you can check if there’s something
off with them

but the main thing is i need that red border to stay visible if possible or
at least be able to bring it back easily without re-editing every time

if there’s a setting or a view option i’m missing let me know thanks

The geometry in the image should be used to align, not the red boundary.

Hi Umer,

The red border in Fusion 360 only shows up while you’re editing the canvas—it’s just a placement guide, not meant to stay after you hit OK. Once you finish, only the image itself remains. If you want a permanent reference, the workaround is to trace the border with a rectangle in a sketch before you exit, or use construction lines around it so you always have that outline visible. That way you can still align everything without having to keep going back into edit mode.

Would you like me to walk you through the steps to set up a construction rectangle around your canvas so it behaves just like that border?

@TheCADWhisperer , I'm presuming the video @omerahmedpc754 is watching is a cowboy video, and they've drawn some outside border line to dimension everything by, rather than from the centre... or smth along those lines as there really should be no need for borders...

@omerahmedpc754 Yes, providing the video would be utmost helpful, and if I may, we could provide a better video for you to follow as this sounds, cowboy-ish, I could be wrong though,

so what you’re saying is instead of relying on the red border i should
import the image then draw a construction rectangle around it using sketch
lines and use that as my guide?

that actually makes sense if the red border isn’t meant to stay visible
after edit mode

i was just using the border in the video as a reference for alignment but
if it’s not supposed to stay then i guess building a sketch frame around
the image with construction lines would work better long term

i’ll try that and use the sketch geometry to lock in position and scale

still feels like the border would’ve been handy but if this is the right
way then i’m down to learn it properly

I'm more curious as to how he does have the red border's as it's not something I recognize natively. Maybe a plug in?

@TheCADWhisperer @dsouzasujay any comment? do you know how he does it? because the file's don't show a red boundary

And @omerahmedpc754 if your still learning Fusion, "learning Fusion in 30 days" 2024 I think is the latest version by Product Design is useful as well as the in-built, self-paced learning Documents in the Fusion App

The video you are referring to is 3 years old.

According to our internal records, the red border was identified as a not expected and was removed based on user feedback. We have removed the red border that appeared alongside the canvas. However, we still show the red border while placing and editing the image.

I would like to point out that the red border is merely for reference. You should still be able to achieve calibration by changing the Environment to 'Dark'.

Follow @TheCADWhisperer recommendation: “The geometry in the image should be used for alignment, not the red boundary.”
The red frame only gives the impression of accuracy. It can only be helpful if the image is precisely limited to the boundary contours.
You can see this, for example, in this screenshot from the video (12:30).

got it thanks for clarifying

so the red border was removed in newer versions after editing which
explains why i can’t see it — it’s not me, it’s just how fusion works now

you mentioned switching the environment to 'Dark' to help with visibility —
how do i access that setting?

and just to be clear will i actually see the red border there or is it just
better contrast for the image itself?

because if the border isn’t coming back then i’m good to work with
construction lines as you suggested but if there’s a view mode where i can
still see something like the border that’d be helpful

just want to make sure i’m not missing a visual aid that could make
alignment easier

Thank you for your follow-up questions. Let me clarify a few points for you.

Switching the Environment to 'Dark':

To change the environment setting to 'Dark' mode for better visibility, follow these steps:
1. Go to the Profile icon(Your Name) at the top right corner of Fusion.
2. Click on Preferences.
3. Under the General tab, scroll down to the Theme section.
4. Select Dark mode from the drop-down menu.
This setting provides better contrast and may help in visualizing details better.

Red Border Visibility:

The red border is no longer a persistent feature in the newer versions of Fusion. It appears only while placing and editing the image for reference purposes. Once you exit the edit mode, the red border will not remain visible.
Unfortunately, there isn't a view mode that retains the red border throughout your workflow. Therefore, using construction lines for alignment is the recommended approach. as suggested by @TheCADWhisperer & @g-andresen

To summarize, the red border was removed for better alignment practices with construction lines. Switching to Dark mode might enhance visibility, but it won't bring back the red border. If you follow the method as recommended.
