Hello,

when you export for example to STEP file from F360 and then import in another soft like Simlab is there a way to avoid getting jagged edges on objects ? In Simlab I can make the import finer but still on zooms I get some kind of jagged edges which aren't in F360. I tried other formats but they seem to behave the same.

thanks,

Hans

Hi,

In Fusion, we use two techniques to avoid the jagged edge display:

1. Different levels of geometry detail(LOD). That is, if one object is occupying more screen pixels, Fusion tries to use a finer level of geomtry details to make it look smoother.

2. Anti-aliasing; unless your graphics card is low video memory, by default Fusion always enables the anti-aliasing to improve the display of edges.

I am not familiar with SimLab so I am not sure if it uses any similar technologies to avoid the jagged edges.

Thanks

Hi thanks guys, it's not the problem in Fusion, in Fusion it's perfectly smooth, just when you import in Simlab, it's especially visible when doing zooms on parts, I've seen this with Cinema 4D in the past as well importing, but I couldn't find a setting in Simlab to avoid this.

thanks,

Hans

Is there an option like in Solidworks that can improve the image quality of Step files when exporting ? This is for now the only showstopper for me, thanks.

Step files should handle arcs just fine. It's STL files that use tessellation where everything is converted into a polygon, and thus vertex tolerance is important.

I dont think there's any way to change the quality of a STEP file, since it's vector/arc in nature.

I see that indeed we have option on stl files but not sure why step files display like this in Simlab maybe a limitation on the render software ... sad. thanks

Try importing it back into Fusion and checking if it's a true arc or not. Should prove interesting.

Strange that Simlab as a rendering program would show arcs so poorly. Doesn't add up in my mind. There must be a setting on Simlab.

Importing back to fusion looked very smooth.

Actually it seems that both Simlab and also Keyshot have these issues on rounded curves, I found some posts on their forum about this https://www.keyshot.com/forum/index.php/topic,5790.0.html, so I guess it's the way the software smooths out normals ? This is not good, as so far I didn't found a good solution other then Simlab for my rendering options. IGES format seems a little better, but this one really is a hard one.

For now I'm going to use IGES format, seems to be best with Simlab and Fusion 360, once you apply a texture it's much better then STEP format, much smoother.
