Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the quick response. Extending the splitting plane gave the same error.

I am trying to use the split command to trim a surface created as a t-spline. The split command doesn't behave like I think it should. What am I doing wrong? Here is a screencast:

sorry embed doesnt seem to be working. Here is a link to the screencast.

http://autode.sk/19gSYAg

Thanks for the help!

I tried with a few different surfaces as cutting tools and have the same problem. Split using a workplane (one of the origin planes) works like I expect.

-jamie

Without having the data, it is a bit hard to tell for sure, but what I suspect is going on is that it has something to do with your splitting plane is interacting with your bottom bracket model at the top. It looks like it is just tangent and also terminates on the same plane.

It sometimes helps if the splitting surface extends beyond the body/faces you need to split. You could try it with the "Extend Splitting Tool" option checked, or you could manually make that splitting surface a bit longer near the intersection.

If you want to send the model to me in a private message, or share it, I'd be more than happy to look at it.

Ah-ha, tweaking the shape of the tool surface and using the "extend splitting tool option" worked. I would still like to understand better why the original plane didn't work. These little mistakes add up timewise.

Thanks!

-jamie

yeah, this should be OK. It looks like there is enough clearance with the splitting surface:

I'll take it up with the modeling team and see what the problem might be.

Thanks,

Hi Jamie,

Well, I got to the bottom of it. Good news and bad news. The good news is that the split works. There is no modeling problem. The bad news is that this is a really bad UI discoverability problem. It had me stumped for a long time.

The problem is this: The Split commands are expecting only a single entity for the split tool. In your screencast (and the first 6 times I tried it), I was selecting on the face. Which selects only that face. If you try to select the other face, it deselects the first face. So, the splitting tool does not intersect the body (and the error message is even telling us that). However, if you select the whole body as a splitting tool, the split works. There are two ways to do this: the most straightforward way is to go to the browser and select it. Or, you can use Select Other. The other way exploits a strange behavior of Fusion selection, which is powerful, but not obvious. This command has two selection filters active: Body and Face. If you are over a Face, it satisfies the Face filter. However, if you are over an Edge, there is no edge filter, so Fusion "promotes" the selection to a Body selection. So, in this command, you can select the body as a splitting tool by selecting over an edge of the body. Like I said: weird, but powerful.

I'm not justifying the UI here. We need to clean this up. The above is just a way to work around it.

I also made a screencast showing selecting by the edge and in the browser: http://autode.sk/1EiILxo

Have a good weekend.
