Thank you Kevin for the sugestions. Yes, I am importing the press fitting from a suppliers 3D cad library.

Please clarify what you mean by "using a rigid mate" to position the fitting to the hole. Also, when push it into the aluminium plate (flush with top face) will that affect the modeling and the rendered surface (mesh-not sure if that is the correct way to express the solid surface)?

I am new to this program, so I will have to review what I saw on Bodies and Components to make sure that I handle the fitting correctly as you are sugesting.

For others here are the tutorials that I found on that subject:

Function

Build assemblies

Bodies and components

Copy and paste bodies

Reuse components

How to create bodies and components

Thank you.

I have a thin aluminum metal plate and need to add a “press fitting” in my design. A tight clearance hole needs to be drilled (extruded) in the plate for fabrication. In the machine shop, the fitting will be squished into the plate with a punch press.

I need to:
1) Include both the plate and the press fitting in the design. So that the plate can be exported to AutoCAD for fabrication in a machine shop
2) In Fusion 360, show/render the fitting as it will appear once it is squeezed/pressed in to the plate material, with out damaging the 3D model body

I need some guidance on the procedure/work flow to accomplish the above. I can understand how to extrude the hole in the plate before it is punched. Must I create two separate components/bodies (??) or projects one with just the hole the other with the “press fitting?” Likely someone else has had to acomplish this before.

For designs like this I will often create the press fit fitting as a Body. Not a component.
I can sketch and draw the press fitting using the hole as a reference.
I leave the interference between the fitting and the hole so that I have the hole in its drilled state.

A second option is to do as you suggest and use components. This is easier if you are importing the press fitting from some other 3D cad library. Use a rigid mate to position the fitting to the hole.
in the assembly tool there are joints used to position one component to another. I use a joint, of type = rigid, to position the top of the insert to the face of the plate and concentric to the hole it is pressed into.

This will create an overlapping solid but thats ok. It will not change the face of the plate.
