If the bottom of the slot can be flat you can use Tangent Plane. Then create a sketch on that plane and extrude cut.

Have benn thinking, how to cut a slot on the cylindrical surface.

Some kind of a guideway, i. e. for a handle.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I'd rather hitnk about some helical guideway in a bushing (cylinder with hole).

I found after experimenting with Tangent Plane the new plane can be at odd angles and not very accurate to use. Tangent Plane at point is more predictable, if the cylinder is on the origin you can use the origin as the point, just set the view first.

Select the face then the origin.

And the new construction plane will be parallel with the view. Here looking from the Front after creating from the top view.

You might be able to use coil, unfortunately there's no option to keep the section perpendicular to the helix. Maybe something for the Ideastation, really for coils the section should be perpendicular with the helix it just doesn't show up until you try something like this.

To deal with the lack of control on the coil cross section dimensions (I guess specifically the circumferential width dimension), after making the cut into the cylinder you can right click and choose Press/Pull, then choose one or both apposing faces of the cut and adjust the cut width. To get a precise dimension, I first measured using Inspect > Measure the cut width, then subtracted that from desired width to know how much to Press/Pull the face(s).

Good luck!

Jesse
