Let's say I created a cylindrical object and is "stands" on the XY plane like a tower.

Now I want to render it horizontally, laying on it's side.

I can of course re-orient it in the viewport, but it seems that also re-orients the scene e.g. the gid light.

How do I orient the assembly independent from the scene ?

The only ability in the render scene settings seems to be rotating the HDRI environment 😕

Hi @TrippyLighting

When you say reorient the scene do you mean via the view cube? That would explain why the environment is following the now orientation.

If you want the object to be on its side, then you will have to use the move tool in MODEL to manipulate the model so that situated the way you want it and then go in to the RENDER workspace.

We will be changing this behaviour in an upcoming release so that the Render environment is separate from the Model environment.

Hope that helps.

That was what the answer I am looking for.

Yes, I could use the move tool, but IIRC I would have to un-ground the root component (?)

I did not create the particular model I was talking about but was helping another user who shared his model with me, with rendering and possibly exporting to Sketchfab.

As I did not want to analyse whether it was designed propperly I was looking for a quick way to re-orient it in reference to the grid-light scene/hdri.

For simplicities sake I imported this as a linked component in a new file and use that for rendering only.

The other thing I have not been able to fiure out is how to make the ground really the ground. the object seems to float above the ground by a few millimeters, which is undesirable.

This is the thread I all of this applies to.

It seems like this change never got implemented. There is still no move command in the Render environment. Moving a model or component in the design environment is not a good method because it clutters up the timeline which then has to be cleaned up afterward and it's very counter-intuitive to have to switch. I've never seen a rendering environment before where you can't rotate the model around. How are you supposed to get good renders of the bottom side of the model? Adding a move command in the render environment which doesn't affect the modeling environment would be a very much appreciated change.

Thanks!
-Sam

Another year and a half later and you can't move in RENDER. Makes it really tough to align and object to a certain part of an HDRI image.
