I'm finding Inkscape to be VERY cumbersome to use. I set a custom paper size in Inkscape the same as the area that I will be working in, in Fusion360. I write some text, export it as an SVG and when I import it into Fusion 360 it's gigantic. I tried using a different SVG file type and now it imports far smaller than the area I'm working in Fusion 360 even though I set the size of the paper / objects in Inkscape. It's ridiculous how difficult it is to lay down a single line font in Fusion 360 and simply trace over it for engraving purposes.

Not sure whether to put this here or on the Ideastastion. There are single line stick fonts available, see here for some samples, they would be very useful for engraving in the CAM workspace. They look OK until you explode to curves, I know the reason is because TTF fonts should be made from closed loops and these fonts don't follow that rule but could Fusion have an option to use stick fonts.

Here's an example of 2 of the fonts, one works quite well the other has a few lines missing.

Thanks Mark.

This is a great find Mark, Thanks for sharing.

Also these can be used right now without any missing lines or issues. Type out the desired text in Inkscape then from the file menu select Path->Object to Path, then Object->Ungroup. Then save as an .SVG file and import into fusion.

Cheers

Phil

I can make use of them with Rhino as well, it has an option for single stroke fonts, it would be nice if Fusion had the same option.

Below, top text with Allow single stroke fonts enabled, bottom text with it disabled. Another useful feature in Rhino is Add spacing, makes engraving small letters a lot easier.

I'm having the very same issue. I'm trying to use the same stick fonts and searched the forums before I posted.

When I explode to curves, some of the lines in the font are "dropped" or missing. I can using the suggested workaround, but I would really like to be able to do it all within fusion. My Fusion 360 just updated today, so I am using the latest version.

I hope Autodesk can keep improving the font support. Thanks!

Inkscape is pixel based but its weird how you have to make this work, it doesn't follow the scale the way you linked.

For instance if you set the document units to inches and create a 1" cube and set the line thickness to 1 px when you exit the rectangle tool it will show its actual size as 1.011" x 1.011" because of the line thickness. So when you open the svg file in Fusion with the units set to inches you have to set the scale at 0.0111 to get a 1"x1" cube.

I am not sure if this is an inkscape issue or a Fusion issue but anyways thats how scale between the two works right now.

Oddly enough if I send this same inkscape file to my Laser Engraver software then the size of the cube is 1"x1" without any scaling so it seems inkscape is not the issue.

Hope this helps

Phil

I've written a script to export SVG from Rhino, it saves as unitless so as long as you work in the same units in both programs everything works without any scaling. Inkscape must be sizing the square based on the outside size allowing for line thickness so that's going to make a simple import a bit more of a challenge! Can you set the line width to zero.

There seem to be a lot of people saying SVG import way too big, any idea how they've set Inkscape up for that to happen? The 0.35277777777778 scale trick works for a lot of people.

I'm not sure Mark, I'm at work but I will try to test what you asked and get back to you here in a little bit.

Idealy it would be nice to just work with all fonts in Fusion, but in the mean time it would probably be good to put together info for inkscape and illustrator svg files and how to get the correct scale in Fusion.

There seems to be a lot of trouble with scale coming from both of these programs.

Phil

I am *VERY* thankful for all information and discussion on this issue from everyone! I had set the units to inches already, but I'll try the methods mentioned here. Any way to stop the file from importing upside down? (It doesn't seem to want to rotate like a normal set of curves upon import, so even if I can get it to come in at the right size I'll be fighting that..)

This one gives me a bad lexical cast error now when I try to import it. It shows the positioning marker as being flipped backwards and upside down.

Edit: Not sure if it will import at all for you or not. It's possible it'll just give that same quickly disappearing error.

Can you attach something that will load. Do you mean the way it imports to the right and below the origin, if so that's the way SVGs work the origin in an SVG is the top left corner.

When I can recreate it, I'll upload it. It was literally backwards and upsidedown (mirrored and upside down if that helps.) The DWG that I imported successfully this morning thanks to your help had the positioning arrows pointing "right and up" and the curves were in the normal expected orientation. With the SVG from Inkscape last night (probably a different version of the file as I attempted many different things.) it was coming in upside down and reversed.

In the meantime, is there a quick way to select all the imported curves in CAM for a trace operation? Right now it's making me select each little piece instead of letting me select all at once. (The click, drag selection rectangle isn't coming up when I try to do that.)

I'm afraid there's no window select in the CAM work space. One thing that might help a bit is click the first segment in a chain, click the selected element again will bring up a selection menu. Select you want an open profile then shift select the end of the chain, then click the green +, carry on around all the chains.
