ok im just going to share my model since theres noway for me to handle the approach, what i like to do is use in the model section the align tool to make a box to stick to the bottom of the head sorta like a head bust per say?, i try to sculpt out of it i try to convert it and i get pop ups i try to pick a face or plane on the head to sketch or modify but i cant.

i started this model in sculpt mode, i recall that at the end of your sculpting i thought that there was a box at the top right of the screen that read "finish"yet i dont see it, when i start or finish sculpting i just move on to Modeling environment and that box never appears, in fact this cat head here in my hierarchy is not purple or white its yellow

Hi @Anonymous,

This model has only a solid body, and seems to be a Direct (non-history-based) model. I don't see a TSpline (Sculpt) body in this model, only a solid body. Where did it come from? Did you import the solid from another program?

It looks from the error you get that you tried to convert this solid to a TSpline body. Yeah, that's not gonna work. In general, you can only convert one face at a time to a TSpline, and usually not a closed face like this one.

Regarding this: "i recall that at the end of your sculpting i thought that there was a box at the top right of the screen that read "finish"yet i dont see it, when i start or finish sculpting", this is also because this design is a Direct Model, not a Parametric (history-based) design. Only parametric designs show this "finish" option.

You can certainly add a block as a base for this model, since it is already a solid. One thing I noticed is that this model is at an odd angle, so the first thing I would do is to Move the body into a better orientation. Then, you can add a base. Here is a screencast showing one way to do this:

Jeff this was a sculpt that im currently doing this was not a obj import, and the odd angle you refer to is fine this is part of a body who neck is at that degree of angle, and there was a sculpt model but after i converted i deleted cuz i dont like all the extra stuff just piling up as im on a touch tablet and trying to scroll up and down is difficult with my finger or the stylus pen from my surface pro 2

this is something i will be 3d printing and later maybe use my cnc to mill a mold for injection molding chells of this body as i will be using motor and micro controllers and drivers

just sorta desinging the body first then i plan to split the model in half and start creating the compartments for the electronics or maybe use the shell feature along with the web function which is why im asking about the picking a face of this head to sketch on that plane

by the way ignore my little anotations on the screenshot, this was a old pic i used here beforejust wanted to point out that this head is part of a body and the main reason why its on a angle jeff

Ah, got it, thanks. Now I understand. You are a braver modeler than I am to delete that TSpline body! I tend to keep that stuff around, because I always end up going back and tweaking stuff later on.

OK, so the basic question is how to place a sketch so that you can continue to model from this head model. This is a good quetsion. I would tend to eyeball it. Create a plane at an angle, then an offset plane from that one and tweak it a bit until you are satisfied with it. If you had kept the TSpline body, you can create a 3-point plane from vertices in the TSpline. You can do this in a solid body as well, but in this case, the body does not have any vertices in the area where you need it.

Here is a screencast showing both methods.

thanks Jeff i been tstaying away from that construction section as i feel that those are just other functions that does thing YOU can do with just sing the sketch method tho i can be wrong it just seems that way to me, but thanks it was useful info and besides sketching on the neck part of that head was not only for sketching but just i wanted to cut a flat plane at the bottom so when i use the shell feature the whole would pretty much be right there and th rest would be hollow.

going back to your comment about me being brave, YES i tend to do this because this is fairly simple and straightforward and if i dont do this deletion i would do what you said you do and end up killing hours on one aspect of the designversus spending equal time thru out the model, this was theres no going back and i would be left with starting off from scratch so i guess the main idea is to keep it clean keep it good looking and keep it short.

you know how long i spent on the inside mechanics of this cat? lol longer then i thought just cuz i wanted to be are real as pssible for when i print the model and is time to assemble
