3dm units?

Hi,

it seems F360 is not taking care of units properly in uploaded 3dm files either from Rhino or from Moi at least. Every time I open an uploaded 3dm file the unit revert to mm and I always use imperial unit (inch).

Is it scaling the model on import or simply changing the model to mm.

To change default units to inches is simple

I simply need to change the unit to inch as you said above and yes my units are already set to inch for all workspace that I use, mostly design and cam. But I just don't understand why I should have to do this, ain't the unit part of the 3dm file?

Not sure I follow what you are trying to say, so I tried the process myself.

I made a cylinder 1 inch radius in Moi with the units set to inches. I saved the file. (pic 1)

I uploaded the file into fusion 360. Note: The units shown depend on the units of the file you create in fusion 360 not the file you import. The file you import just becomes a component of the fusion file.

1st fusion file had mm units and the cylinder came in at the right size but with mm units displayed (pic 2)

2nd fusion file had inch units and the cylinder came in at the right size with inch units displayed (pic 3)

with the default design units set to inches the fusion opens an empty file in inches, I drag the 3dm component into the window and it comes in fine no changing of units needed.

Can you make a screencast or video if you are experiencing something different?

You are inserting the file so it scales ok. If you open the file it will always open in mm your 1" will be 25.4mm. If you always work in inches and all your defaults are set to inches every file you upload through the data panel will open in mm and you have to change the units to inches.

Here's the upload dialog my defaults are inches and the 3dm is inches.

File opens in mm

This has been repoted a lot of times so must be very difficut to fix.

The only workaround would be to export as a stp file and use New Design From File on the file menu. New Design From File does respect your default unit settings, don't know why cloud upload\import doesn't.

Ok I understand, there are 2 methods of using an uploaded file in F360. One is to insert a file into a file create with the unit as set in your preference as you explain before. The second method is just open the file directly. You seem to favor the first method. I use mostly the second.

Here I have no problem with importing a file into an existing file of different unit, then of course the unit should be converted to the work file unit. That's the normal behaviour if I can say that.

What I'm saying is when you open the uploaded file directly, then I expect the file would open with the same unit it was saved in. For me that's the "normal" behaviour and fusion doesn't do that, though the size of object is correct as you show here, the unit are in milimeters when the file was saved in inches.

In Moi and in Rhino if you open (not import) a file that was saved in milimeters, both program open the file in milimeters and of course if the file was saved in inch, both open the file with the proper unit, ie. inches.

I hope this is more clear.

@Anonymous thanks for clearing that up. you are right I normally reference the part. And you are right that is a bit annoying. Sorry there is no easy fix for this one.
