Chain Selection causes unwanted selection

Hey all,

So, i've take the time to go back and start redoing most of my designs by drawing everything out, but i'm still getting this weird selection behavior. In this latest version, I select the bottom layer of one of my letters, (every other letter/carve out works fine) however, just this one letter, causes everything to select. I don't know if there is a ghost layer from a previous body that is showing up, but it's irritating. If you look at the selection pieces as you select letters, it's showing odd shapes, etc..

Here you can see how it's selecting odd artifacts from something. I don't know what it is.. but is this normal? Is there a way to make sure everything is cleaned up from a file? It seems as if it's finding junk that was left behind from somewhere.

Hi @dregalia2014,

That's a very nice design! A quick question for you: Is this a question about CAM behavior in Fusion or Modeling behavior? I can reproduce the strange selection behavior if I try to edit "2D Pocket4". Is that what you are referring to? I'm asking so that we can direct the right people to look into this. Unfortunately, I'm not a CAM expert...

Thank you on the design complement. I think I'm finally at a point where I can do a nice instructional on it.

So, here is the thing.

I don't know if it's a modeling problem (didn't connect a line, something wrong with the sketch, maybe the push/pull didn't go off right, or it's a bug)

- or -

If there is a CAM problem where this is creating weird behavior

- or -

There is a modeling bug where prior art is still ghosting somewhere and needs to be cleared out (think ghost shapes of bodies past that are trapped in the xml, possibly from unlimted undo that are 'hidden' but not gone.)

I am banking on the fact that it's a modeling issue first, that is presenting thru the cam module.. I just wish I could export and import or copy/paste sketches thru the interface.

There's a similar thread here. There have been a few problems like this, you could try my suggestion in the other thread of projecting to a new sketch. Have you tried generating the toopaths to see if they're any good.

I'll check it out. BTW, thanks on your other advice on drawing everything new, Now that I have the hang of it, it's serving me quite well.. well, other than these new quirks I'm running into as I get better with the software.

Well, it kind of worked, but check out the pattern.. It looks like it ended up doing an adaptive clear....

I don't think that's going to translate right to GCode.. I'll run it thru a simulator, but I think it's just going to carve out the entire letter...

I think the other post you referenced and what I'm experiencing are working with the same bug.

I think there's a pretty serious bug in the CAM at the moment when it comes to 2d contour selection. There have been a few problems reported with drilling and 2d ops. I still had a copy of your design that shows it generated fine.

If i try and generate the toolpath again it gets stuck at 9% and just sits there.

And the contour selection looks all wrong.

I may not be doing something right with the project to surface then..

So, in your opinion, what would you do?

Or should this get flipped over to Dev for bugs? I've left my one version on the server as is, and have been working in a saved copy, that way, it's sitting just as it was.

If you need to get this done it looks like project to sketch idea works. Start by making an offset plane, if you use sketch on face you'll end up with a load of auto-projected lines that are more trouble than they're worth. Press P for project and select the bottom face of each letter.

Then pick all the contours in the CAM workspace.

If everything goes blue click the red arrow on that contour to swap the direction, the letter C in this example.

The toolpath generates fine using the sketch contours.

Oh wait, you're using a much older version it looks like. I've started all the way over from scratch.. I wanted to clean up and create templates for later use.

I'll try this technique tho, it may be what i'm looking for on this version. I just worry that one day as I am re-using templates, that they will continue to get 'muddied' up, since you can't really copy/paste sketches, etc in Fusion 360. So, the goal is to get it to a point, and then roll from there. Worst case scenario, I start over clean again and see what happens.

BTW, I've run into that 9% error too.. which is causing me to scrap everything and start over from scratch, to make sure I have a clean project.

Do you know if this is a constant error between all autodesk, or is it just limited to Fusion 360?

I've sent a message to support with a link to this thread and one in the CAM forum. There is a similar problem reported with hole selection for drilling ops that has been logged with the developers so a fix might be underway.

This should just work, I wouldn't do anything special until he bug is fixed. If you need to make the part then maybe make a copy of the design and use project to sketch to get it done.

I don't know what you're trying to copy as a sketch but I've done a tips thread that shows how to copy sketches between documents or sketches, Link.

I'm not all that worried about it just yet. I have a working version that I can run.. with all the GCode. I am just re-doing it so it's better.. cleaner lines, better dimensions, better my skills. yada yada yada.

But now that I know what I'm doing, it's easier to find bugs as I run thru things, and get clarification on them, and make sure it's nothing procedural, instead of just not knowing how the application works.

Hey Jeff... looks like this was posted as a bug.. any way to check the status or get on the fast track ring to test a possible solution? This only started happening with the last release of Fusion 360, and it now affects all of my models. Thanks for the help!

A ticket CAM-3508 is created to track the issue of chain selection preview. And we also have another ticket CAM-3380 to track the hang of generating toolpath.

Thanks for the quick reply.. do you know if there is a way to go back to a previous working version of the software until this bug is fixed? As of right now, i'm at a stand still.

No, it does not support to go back to a previous version. Can you tell which version were you once working on?
One alternative solution is that since we have added "Engrave" to support to generating toolpath for the text, you may want to have a try on it.

Sorry for the late response, but the issues there are under investigation. Since those issues could relate with fundermental implementation, which needs time to be figured out. Will update when they are solved.
