SVG does extrude, but layers don't line up.

Trying to do some 3d printing. (Think drink coaster) I made a basic circle and extruded it 6mm. I then imported an SVG using the bottom profile of the coaster as the plane and extruded it 2 mm as a new body it forces it into the coaster on the bottom face with the SVG logo on the bottom (which is a smooth plate on the 3d printer), and print the other layers on top of it. When I look at the bottom and apply the appearances, it keeps the coaster color. If I lower the extrudes .01 , which should technically be lowering it into the print bed, then the appearances show up in f360. Once I do this, the 3d print option selecting all the bodies, exports to my slicer and I can print it. If I import the SVG file and use the top of the coaster as the connection plane and then extrude -3 and try to apply appearances, it acts the same way. It's almost like the .svg file has a beginning thickness of .01 and when you extrude it starts the extrude at 0 instead of -.01.

To see what I am referencing, if you open the attached .f3d file and look at the bottom plane, then roll the timeline back on each side of the move (steps 7 and 10), you will see that the appearances are not clear until after the .01 move. That also translates to problems when exported to printer slicer software.

Any help would be appreciated.

Make each body a component, bodies in the same component will have the same color. Applying a color to a face will allow different colors on the same body, but may not work for printing.

You'll probably need to Combine/Cut (with Keep Tools selected) the logo from the other body in order to print.

That appears to help with the level problem, but it puts the body in the center of the coaster. When I try to do a move on the body to get it back in place (final destination isn't centered on the coaster), it leaves a copy and where I move the information to, it has the level problem again. I am going to try to make them components as you suggest, but at the end of the day it has to be where I can select them in the 3dPrinting slicer, because I have a 4 color printer and I want it to make the changes itself.

Make each of the bodies components.
Make the logo components a Rigid Group.
Create a rigid joint between one of the logo components and the main body.
Use the offsets in the joint dialog to position the logo.
Combine/Cut the logo from the main body. (This must be done after making the joints.)

Now, when you edit the joint dialog offsets, the cut positions will follow the logo's position.

Note: Any of the joint origins of the logo components can be used, but it would probably be better to add a joint origin at the center so you only need to set one offset dimension.

I am sure you are probably correct with what needs to be done, but I have tried to go through these directions quite a few times and I can' t tell if I am supposed to make the coaster, each of the letters, then each of the other graphics different components, and I can't find a menu item for Rigid joint and I don't get a joint dialog. I am extremely new at this and can't find anything else that shows what you are explaining. Could you please put together a sketch with what you are trying to explain? I am sure that it is not, but to me it looks like an obvious software bug when it works as long as it has a .01 mm lift to the letters.

The video helped me understand better. I am going to process this for a bit and try some of my other components to see if I have the process down. Thanks so much for your assistance. I will reply when I have had a chance to work with it more.

Worked perfectly, and was repeatable. I repeated the steps for the Corvette flag below, and the Corvette letters above. I was able to export to .3mf file. I was also able to use the 3D print option if I selected the top level component and open it in the slicer software perfectly. Thanks a million.

That does look pretty nice. I would suggest creating a sketch in each logo component then adding bounding box with a center rectangle for each of the three logo components. Add a point at the center, then create a joint origin at the point. Using this will allow you to perfectly center each of the logo components.

Honestly I googled directions for bounding box before coming back to this thread, but about all I can find is code for an API, and not even good directions on how to use it. I tried going back to my original sketch and made a box around it, made diagonal lines from each corner, and found the center point. When I try to make a joint, it will not let me select the point. I then created a new sketch inside my logo component that was a center rectangle, and used the center point of my original sketch as the center of the rectangle. I then made the square in my sketch and my 3 other components in the logo as a Rigid group. I was then able to create a joint between my 'bounding box' center point and the origin point of the base object. I set the bounding box to not be shown and confirmed that I could move the joint and it all went with it. It worked, but was this the easiest way?

A center rectangle is the easiest way as it creates a point at the center😀 A two or three point rectangle would need a point added at the center in order for a joint to be created. The bounding box doesn't need to be at the sketch center, but does need to match the outline of the logo geometry.

I hope you don't mind me asking so many questions, but it looks like a center rectangle wants you to select the center point first instead of opposite corners to find the center. Am I looking in the wrong place?

That is correct. Once you have the rectangle created, drag the edges to the logo or use the coincident constraint (after projecting the logo to the rectangle sketch).

This video shows the technique as well as why tangent or coincident constraints may not work on splines☹️ The few microns it's off by eyeballing it probably won't matter.
