I am trying to project a sketch of a coil to the surface of a revolved feature. When I try it with a perfect cylandar the coil profile projects as expected but when the surface has a curved profile it only projects a small section of the curve.

The first picture shows the coil profile scetch and a the cylinder.

The second show the result of using project to surface to project the coil sketch to the cylinder's surface.

The third shows the result of projecting the same coil sketch profile to a revolve feature. You can see it only prjects a small section of the curve.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You don't have an option to project the curve radially inward, only project using closest point gets the curve to the surface but it's not what you want.

A workaround: make a coil that can be used to split the surface. Below is a screencast showing how I made the coil.

That's a very clever work around. Thanks a lot for taking the time to post that I really appreciate it. Hopefully someday that feature will be added.

Revision: There's a simplier way to make the helicoid surface. I realized the inner coil was not required for the loft. A straight line is all thats needed.
