Hi There!

can anyone share a tip on how to design an helical gear in 360?

I am able to generate a spur gear but I am having a hard time with helical gear. Any tips would be much apprecited!

Thanks!

How good do the gears need to be, with a real helical gear the tooth profile needs to be at the same angle as the helix. If you can make do with something that's close I have an idea.

Start with a flat gear. Draw a coil, for revolutions divide the rotation angle by 360, in the example below the gear is rotated 10° over the 20mm height.

Then make a circular pattern of the coil.

Then make a plane on the top face of the gear, start a sketch using the plane and project the top face to the sketch.

Then use Sweep to make the gear. For type set Path + Guide rail, select the edges of the coil for the path and Guide Rail and the gear sketch for the Profile, set Operation to New Body.

Finished Gear.

Note if you make all your gears like this they should run together OK, you might have a problem if you try and run them with a true helical gear.

File attached for reference.

Mark
