Insert derive without changes to source design

I need to create a new design in which to insert a derive of an existing component. For some reasons however, once I select the component and attempt to create the derive I am prompted to save the changes (which changes?) or else all changes will be discarded (again, which changes?)

Since all I want is that component as is, without affecting the source design file or his history, I close the prompt with "Don't save". And now Fusion crashes. 3 or 4 crash reports sent to Autodesk this morning.

If I decide to save the changes, the derive is created but ... it is already out of date and I'm supposed to call Get Latest on it. Seriously!? Not to mention that all other documents that reference that source design are now out of date to, just because Fusion sees changes it cannot discard without crashing.

Why is "insert derive" not a read only operation?

Sometime ill have similar issues, you can try saving the file you are having troubles with as a new file. Then using the new file when inserting derive. Not sure if this will work or not, but its worth a try.

When inserting any linked file into another, both files should be clean, i.e. saved. Otherwise, Fusion will use the last saved version and any changes made after that will be lost.

I have not done testing, but based on logic...

If you Derive a component the original component must be "marked" to indicate that it is shared. That way any derivation will by updated if the original component is changed. I think this is the change.

I have not done testing, but if you change an original component - wouldn't you logically expect all derivations of the original to reflect the change (unless you expressly break the link). The only way Fusion could keep track of derivations is by marking the original. Therefore not read only operation.

Fusion sees changes it cannot discard without crashing.

This sounds like a real issue.

Can anyone else reproduce this issue (I don't have time to try at the moment)?

This is a case where the prompt to save comes on an already saved and
closed file. In some cases this could be due to an addin that makes changes
to the design as soon as opened. So I was sure to stop the addin just in
case. I also opened the source design just to make sure there is no pending
recovery file on it.

The file looked clean and saved, there was no explanation for the prompt to
save it. Yet the prompt was there, and also the crash after dismissing it.

Either way, read only should always be an option. Even saving the file with
no actual/significant changes still increases the version and that
propagates updates that are not really needed.

The xref mark is very likely saved outside of the source design. In this
particular case I had to assemble two parts together and the prompt to save
was only show for one of them.

I do a lot of derive insertion and aside from this weird case there is
seldom a save prompt and that is explained by the source design actually
being opened and with unsaved changes.

I do hope that someone @Anonymous could lookup those crash reports and
figure out what was going on here.

The fix it. If I am forced to open a design just so that I can export it or
derive it, I should be able to do it without altering the source. ALWAYS!
