topic saving a subassembly in Fusion Design, Validate & Document Forum

Hello,

I've drawn a cabinet in F360, and made a rigid group for a drawer box in the cabinet. I drew the components within the model of the cabinet, and now I'd like to get the box out of the model and in to it's own model file so I can create parameters for the box, and have it for future use.

I'm stuck after I isolate the components of the drawer box rigid group. I'm looking for a save-as, or save-copy-as, for just the isolated components. Is there a better workflow, or am I missing something in a menu somewhere?

Thanks,

Matt

Hi @Anonymous,

Fusion has half of what you need (unfortunately, only half). You can right-click on a component in the browser and choose "Save Copy As". This will save out that component as a separate design. However, this will not replace your current design with an external link to the newly-saved design. If all you care about is re-using this in other designs, then you are in good shape.

You can sometimes, if you have been very careful in constructing that component, delete the features associated with this component in your overall assembly, then insert the new design. But, you will have to at least re-create any joints between it and the parent assembly, or other components in your design. Worst case, you will find you have a lot of broken references (if you have projected into other sketches, or used geometry from the saved component in defining other components, etc).

We have, somewhere in our backlog, plans for an "externalize" command, which would do exactly what you want. But that's not on the immediate roadmap.

Jeff

If you're interested in getting the "other half" you can vote on the Idea I posted ther in december.

I find it hard to believe that this only has 8 votes!
