Hi - when closing two updated files they no longer show the date in the data panel list view but NaN/NaN/NaN. What can I do - the files reopen but I am worried about closing the application in case I lose something....HELP.

That should be a temporary condition. There is a reason for it, and I don't recall what that is at the moment, but I'm asking someone who does know.

The files are saved in the cloud. You can verify this by going to A360 and looking at them in the viewer. You could even try downloading them just to ensure your data is fine, which it is.

As soon as I get an answer I'll come back and update the post.

Thanks,

Hi Phil - thanks for your prompt respsonse - in the end I had to close the application for a mac software upware update - on reopening 360 the file dates have appeared and the files seem to be fine and the latest versions. I'd still be interested to know what caused it.

What browser do you use and is it up to date?

Can you send your diagnostic log files, there might be a clue in them.

Phil - as requested the diagnostic files. Subsequently I have had, what I call, 2 seizures where 360 stop responding. I am using safari Version 9.1 (10601.5.17.4) but I am aware my imac is getting old - I’m still running on Yosemite weary of the reports of the upgrade especially with old machines. In addition I am not blessed with the fastest internet connection living in a rural UK location (+/-13.00 Mbps download / 0.8 mbps upload)!.
So in preparation for upgrading my hardware could you confirm the procedure to transfer 360 on to a new machine.
regards
Greg

I've attached the log file again below - I'll stick to the community message system in future!.

Phil the freeze events I’ve experienced recently have been whilst modelling a design, for example in a multi body and component design with a sketch also displaying I’ve attempted to ‘press pull’ a body facia whilst zoomed in. When accepting, by pressing ‘done’ nothing happens and after a short while the revolving ballon appears and the application stops responding to the keyboard leaving me no option, after waiting for several minutes, to force quit and reopen. On occasions I experience the same but after a short wait, normally less than a minute, the modelling action occurs and I can carry on. The freeze however seems to be a completely random event.

My only thought - is this occurring when 360 is also backing up to the cloud and the problem is therefore related to my relatively poor connection speed? (I’m set to what i assume is a default 5min automatic recovery save time interval).

thanks

Greg

Your internet speed is not that bad and shouldn't be causing problems.

The fact that you have some events that last a short time might be related to actual compute events, depending on the size of your model and complexity.

How big is your design? Go to view > show text commands. Ensure the control is set to TXT, type command.count, press enter. What does it say?

Oops, my bad. It's component.count, sorry was typing too fast for my Monday brain.

Your logs show problems with the model "Upright front with UMP" related to compute times. So if you could get the component count for that file it would help.

Do you experience these freezes with any other design, or with a blank design?

With only 4 GB RAM and a 256 MB video card, you are near the lower end of acceptable hardware. For serious CAD work (i.e. hundreds of bodies/components or more), 8 GB RAM and a minimum 1 GB video card is what I would recommend to someone purchasing hardware today.

This will reduce the load on your video card.

Go to ?Help menu > Graphics Diagnostic.

Use Limit All Effects

Unlike the other file this file has, after being copied from an earlier file ended up without 'design history'. Can this effect the processing performance?

In all honensty I not sure if I've been working the best way with 360 with my multi component project especially as I initially waited to convert bodies to compenents until I'd ensured they worked together in one file or design - perhaps I should have designed and built up the overall design in different files and then combined / copied their finished compenents into the full design? - anyway I'm planning to convert most bodies to compenents in the 'full design' file soon and maybe insert these into seperate files / designs to output drawings etc - do you think this is advisable?

I've never had a freeze with a blank design

I've had the 'limit all effects' option set from first using 360 so I'll certainly ensure when I go for new machine to max out the ram and video card spec.

Thank you -

I'm sure the users here can fill in any blanks I miss, but here is my take on your models and workflow.

Models:

The first one is not very big. If you are experiencing freezes while editing it, please let me know. I may want a copy of it to investigate.

The second one is much larger, but not overly so. I'm still worried that it's just your video card at this point.

With Overrides: LeafOccurrences 372: Bodies 1083:

VisibleLeafOccurrences 10: VisibleBodies 91:

LeafOccurrencesWithVisualMaterialOverrides 0:

OccurrencesWithTransformOverides 385

This tells me you have 372 components and they contain 1083 bodies. ~3:1 ratio of bodies to components.

Visible components and bodies are 10/91. So you must be modeling with bodies that live on the root of your browser, makes sense by your description of moving bodies out later into components.

Workflow:

Rule #1: If you are working with multiple components, you must first make a new component and activate it before adding sketches and bodies to it. Ensure it is active when you are working on it.

"I initially waited to convert bodies to compenents until I'd ensured they worked together in one file or design "

This works fine if you don't have a giant design (>3k bodies/components), and do not plan to use the parametric aspects of these components (sketches mainly) in other designs. The reason is that by doing a dedicated "top down" design, your sketches stay behind when you "save out" a component for reuse. See rule #1 above.

"perhaps I should have designed and built up the overall design in different files and then combined / copied their finished compenents into the full design?"

This is bottom up design and works really well for two major things: if you don't need to relate components while you model them (related sketches, parameters, etc) you can do this easily, and also if you plan to use these parts in multiple designs. If you then edit the design, it will update in all assemblies that reference it.

"anyway I'm planning to convert most bodies to compenents in the 'full design' file soon and maybe insert these into seperate files / designs to output drawings etc - do you think this is advisable?"

In order to insert them into other designs, you will need to save a copy outside of this "home" design. When you do, they will show errors for the sketches, and will be essentially history-free. They also will not be related to the "home" design where they started. I can't say if it's advisable, but it's certainly possible as long as you realize the limitations.

Hardware:

Are you using a secondary monitor?

Can you isolate a particular model/workflow that freezes regularly? If so, I would appreciate a model and some steps to reproduce it. This makes fixing problems a lot easier. 🙂

Thanks,

Hi Phil - no I'm not using a secondary monitor

Regarding isolating a file / design that freezes - I've not had a reoccurance for a few days now - I'll send you whatever file does it next if that is ok. Hopefully this will be a wait!

regards

Greg
