topic Does Split Body for solid models allow user to select "direction" of split? in Fusion Design, Validate & Document Forum

I would like to use planes and surfaces as tools to split bodies into pieces. The "Split Body" tool does this quite well, but the way it names the two bodies is sometimes frustrating.

It treats one of the bodies as the Original body and the other one as a New body, and any modeling steps (boolean combines especially) defined after the split reference the Original body. Unfortunately, it seems to determine this convention randomly, or at least in a way I cannot modify.

In the Patch workspace, there is also a "Split Body" command, and this one DOES allow you to change this name assignment: If you are splitting a surface with another surface, using the "reverse normal" tool on the splitting surface switches the names.

But if you want to use a construction plane (which doesn't allow control over normal direction) or a surface to split a solid body, the normal direction doesn't matter: the two parts are named the same regardless of the normal direction.

Is there a way to chose which body after a split is considered the Original and which is considered New? This would be quite helpful.

The two bodies created bty the splei are two separate entities that can be edited separately. You can change the name to your liking.

If you want to make edits to the original before the splitting operation, you can simply move the timeline marker to the point in time before the split operation, berfore your edit and move the marker back to the end.

I'm having the same problem.

I have an original part which I named "Inner". I have a split surface and I perform a split feature which results in two bodies "Inner" and "Body1". I rename "Body1" to "Outer". However the naming is opposite of what I want - the outer body is called "Inner" and the inner body is called "Outer". If I rename the bodies to swap the names then the original body before the split operation is renamed Outer which is also not what I want.

Is there a way to specify which part is name-linked to the before-split part? As the opening post mentioned, changing the direction of the normal for the split surface does not change the split 'direction' as it would in the surface split command.

(Ideally I would like an entirely separate name, like "WholePart", before the split operation but I'll settle for one of the bodies carrying the name through so long as I can choose which one it is)

Any updates/solutions on this? I am creating a file where things like naming conventions and structure will be reviewed and I would like to have some consistency throughout the timeline!
