Fusion 360 - Wrap sketch around cylinder and extrude

Hi !

I facing problem with cylinders nad cutting shapes.

As text, and simple object can be cutted from cylinder, more complicated shapes not.

I`m not native english so its hard to subscribe.

My plan is to get cylinder (with some thickness),

sketch shape (for example some flames or flowers) to be around 360degrees of this cylinder.

Then cut/extrude selected shapes around all cylinder.

Pipe feature its not i`m looking for, because i got complicated shapes to cut (like flames).

Any tip or advice will be apprieciated.

Hi @promm,

Maybe there is way around ? If i will take 10x20x2mm cube, and bend it to cylinder at 360 degrees ? I will make my project way forward with this !

I am not sure what you mean by "bend it to cylinder". Can you explain the workflow?

@promm Och yes - simly take paper sheet (A4), and make a cylinder from it.

This is my workflow. Instead of wraping, i will cut first, and then make cylinder with my cutted sheet.

Can we make it in Fusion 360 ?

@spajda.pl,

I asked the workflow question because we do not have a way to bend inside of Fusion and I was not sure how you would accomplish what you describe. Wrap to surface is a feature enhancement that we have been asked to do and is in our backlog.

Hi spajda.pl,

@promm is right we don't support "wrapping" like the paper video shows. You can use a series of patterns around a cylinder to get close to what you are looking for. In this attached model I made a cut into the cylindrical face then patterened the cut around the cylinder.

if you are looking for something more like a continuous design element that gets a lot more complicated, it won't be impossible, but it will be very cumbersome to do in fusion until we implelment this capability.

Part of this, too, is considering what you want to do with this after the model is made. are you going to try and make this? if you're going to 3d print this then probably not too much more to worry about, but if you're thinking ome other low-run or high volume production the way those cuts are made in the cycleder will be problematic due to improper draft.

I've attached this model so you can inspect what I've done, if you need a little more explanations I can post a video of this workflow if you like.

How do I open the cylinder wrap v1.f3d file in Fusion 360? I'm getting an error message saying "opening of local files is not supported!"....

Is this file uploaded to the Samples section of the Data Panel? If not, can it be? Or maybe there is another solution that you can recommend.

When you click the file here in the thread it's downloaded into your download folder. It might be a bit OS and browser dependent where the file ends up.

Then in Fusion 360 in the "File" menu choose "New design from file" and then select the downloaded file.

The team that has this in their backlog is currently working on hole and thread. The amount of time this project takes to complete will determine when this will be implemented.

Niiice! I need that feature too! Current thread feature can't do asymmetrical threads which I prefer in some situations.

I will be patiently waiting for the wrap feature and hoping for the day I no longer have to use Solidworks.

Fusion360 has excelled the productivity in our Sr. Design course exponentially for parts that are 3D printed or CNC milled! Looking forward to it getting better and better.
