You attached a .jpg but on .stl.

Anyway, a .stl is rather useless for this application. A .stl file is a triangulated mesh file and as such not really editable in Fuiosn 360.

If you have this avialable in a solid modeling file format, e.g. .stp or.igs that would be much more useful.

Thanks for the response. The die block is a detail out of my die design which is in a STP. File. I didn't know how to save it out of fusion 360 to my desktop as a STP. Fusion 360 offers you to save it as a Stl file. Not sure why they would do that if it is not compatible. I will post it as a STP. File once I figure out how to do that in fusion 360.
Thanks Max

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the forum, I appreciate that you would like to share your design with us.

Here is a link which describes how to export files into *.stp.

If you would like to enable us to edit your design, you can share a public link with us. How this works is explained in the link here.

To close the slots quickly you can try the following:

1. You can close the slots in the design by using patches with the link here.

2. Once you closed the slots, you can use Boundary Fill in the Patch environment. Here is a youtube video which might help.

I hope this information helps and I would be glad If you could share your design with us.

Thanks,

You might be able to use press pull on the faces to close the slots, it works well with parallel sided slots not sure how well it with work with what you've got there. Something else I've used is in the model workspace select all the surfaces of a slot and hit delete, if you're lucky the surfaces will untrim back to a solid. It would be nice to have you model to experiment a bit.

@Anonymous wrote:
.... Fusion 360 offers you to save it as a Stl file. Not sure why they would do that if it is not compatible. ....

*.stl is the file type use for 3D Printing (additive manufacture, rapid prototyping....) machines.

3D printing is becoming very accessable - that is why this format is included in the save options.

In some cases a *.stl file can be read back in and converted to B-Rep, but because this is going from a triangular faceted planar mesh - the resulting solid cannot exactly match precision machined part geometry. Useful only for reference or maybe for organic shapes were precision isn't critical.

From your problem description it sort of sounds to me like your original file was a STEP file (*.stp), I assume supplied by someone else rather than a native Fusion 360 *.f3d file that you created.

If that is the case - then you don't need to save anything from Fusion - simply attach your original STEP file here and someone will demonstrate how to edit as needed.

Sharing Fusion 360 designs can be done several ways in Fusion 360's native format. For this file you can export as a .f3d file to a chosen file location on your computer.

The folks trying to help you out here can directly open that .f3d fil and open it from a file by using "New design from file"

The .stl file format was developed in the late 80's by 3D Systems as a one way data format to be sent to a sterelithography 3D printer. More detail s right at your finger tips 😉

The format was never intended to serve as a data exchange foramt between CAD applications an really is the least common denominator with a strong emphasis on least!

Thanks Mike, as I was able to patch the slots but I am having trouble blending the patch area into the main block, using the boundry as you reccomended. I was going to attach the patched block to this post , but I still can not figure out how to save just the detail block as a STP. I did do as you suggested to save but it not only saves the detail block that I have pulledd out of the whole design, but also saves the whole design. I did try just selecting the detail and then tryed Save as or export and both saves the entire design. Once i get this figured out, I will post the patched block for someone to show me how to blend it.

      Thanks Max

If you have only bodies in the file there's no option to Export and save as a stp file. If you have components right click on a component and you have the option to Export.

If you have just bodies you could reimport the stp file and delete everything apart from the Die Block then export just that.

Thanks Mark, I now know how to save a detail. I did what you suggested and it did save my detail but I couldnt get it to save the patch work in the die block. So I figured out that i save the detail first and then brought it back into fusion, I was able to patch it and then save it that way. Now if you are someone else can smooth the patchwork in by using the boundry and let me know how to do that, I would appreciate that. The patched die block is attached.

        Thanks Max

Thanks Mark and all of you for helping me. While trying to do this, I have learned a few other things about fusion. I have just started my own business this year and Fusion 360 seems to

be just right for that, and its affordable.

I had purchased another software about 4 months ago and join their forum and never got a response back to my first question, so Thanks Again to all, for helping me learn. I wish this could be a 2 way street, but for now, I dont think I can offer any help.

         Thanks Max

I make mould tools and use the technique above to simplify imported stp files quite often. One tip. After deleting all the unwanted surfaces and getting to a point where you're happy with the model turn record history on then any other modifications you make can be edited.

I´m glad that my tips helped to close your design. Could you may share a screen cast that we can help

you to output your design as a step file?

Here is the download link for screen cast.

Thanks,
