Help... the best way to Construct a Worm Gear

I would like to 3d print a Worm Gear for small stepper motor, Where I need mor tork.

What would be the right/best way to do it in Fusion ?

It doesn't have to be a spur gear, Straight tooth gear would be a Fantastic start

Hi Harvid,

From my experience, this is a bit tricky in Fusion 360. That being said, you might be able to model the teeth of the worm gear with the following steps:

Create a Cylinder
Choose Coil to remove geometry from the existing cylinder (with a square or triangular profile).

I'm not 100% sure that this will give you the exact profile you need, but it might make a passable 3D print. If not, I would recommend finding an existing worm gear from an online resource, such as GrabCAD, uploading it into Fusion 360, and then modifyingn the geometry to match your stepper motor.

Hey there...

Here are some other ideas.

You can try the following Helix Generator one of our team members made. I havn't tested this, but I know and use other add-ins that Patrick has made:

The other approach is similar to Taylors in approach, but slightly different.

1. make a cylinder

2. add thread

3. convert the thread edge to sketch

Then you have a helix to use for either a swept cut or a to add the threads to a cylinder.

See example here, although I was trying to make a tapered helix in this case....

I really can't see any reason for why i cant make this sweep...

Is it Fawlty curves or Fawlty tool ?

I have even make a small offset of the curves so the didn't touch each other...

I think its because the cut ends directly on the face. Try to extend the gear profile slightly.

If you don't have time to draw one yourself, or are just too lazy. Pick out one that will work for your application, on MC Master Carr's website, then use the Insert McMaster-Carr Component feature on the Insert tab. This is also extremely helpful, when you are a "CAD Newbie" like me.

@Beyondforce The forms are not as simple as that. The worm is probably a 20° a side rack form cut around a helix. The form in the gear is probably an involute form cut using the same helix as the worm.

Yes I know it's not that simple. I just need to know exactly what type (shape) of a gear and a worm. There are many of them out there.
