STL Import

Hello,

I have a small problem. When I import some STL the scale is not correct but I do not find a way to correct this scale.

Somebody can help me?

Hi @Anonymous,

Welcome to the Forum. You can maybe try a work around to import your *.stl into Fusion?

To Do This, you can follow these steps:

You can go into the SCULPT Environment, also called Direct Modeling Environment
When you click at the Insert menu, you will find the option to insert a Mesh as *.stl or *.obj
Once you have selected your file, Fusion will ask you in which Dimension's you want to import your file

Here is a link to a similar post which might help as well. I have created a screen shot which shows where you can find the insert option.

I hope this information helps to import your STL.

@Mike.Grau Thanks! That helped me. However, I now have a suggestion. I created my model by using the "Import" feature from the Data Panel. This allows me to directly import a STL file as a new model. However, there is no opportunity during this process to define the scale factor. Also, I opened my STL file in a text editor and could clearly see that it specified millimeters as the units. However, F360 imported it as centimeters. This is perhaps a case where having more than one way to do the same thing isn't necessarily good. Perhaps removing the import option from the Data Panel is the best option since starting a new project and inserting an existing file seems a bit more intuitive for me. Regardless how you approach it, the scale should be able to be defined in both processes.

Hi @Anonymous,

I´m glad that you were able to import your design. I agree with you, that would be really helpful to have a feature

which allows you to chose the units to mm, cm or m. Just in case you have not seen this post in the idea station

with the link here, I think this is what we are looking for. I have voted for it.

I would really like to have it in Fusion in the future.

I'm also having this problem. I imported a stl file in inventor and no way a dji phantom drone leg is 8inches in diameter. I was wondering if there are other solutions without using fusion 360? I'm still on inventor 2015. Thank you!

I recommend that you simply attach your *.ipt file (and/or*.stl) over there and someone will show you how to fix it.

how do i convert the stl file which i imported into fusion? they said they aborted the process as there are too many triangles

On something that simple - I would use Base Feature rather than t-Spline and then Insert.

And then I would probably only use for reference to model a Revolve rather than convert to a B-rep.

Attach your *.stl file here if you can't figure it out.

You are trying to do what? Attach the file here?

Are you on Windows or are you on Mac OS?

If Windows, right click on the stl file name and select Sent to Compressed (zipped) Folder.

Attach the resulting *.zip file here.

So according to note in above link sculpt does not import exact sizes?? how does one import a stl and maintain size and shape? What I don't understand is why import doesn't read the units information and import at the correct size? For a program used to design things it would seem size should take on more importance to the developers than appears to be the case.
