File: http://a360.co/2a5eg9r

I have encountered an issue where creating a new drawing from an assembly does not result in all sub-components being present in the generated Parts List. I have used nested sub-components as a way to organize the Browser tree since folders do not exist. In my case, I have grouped fasteners for an assembly into a separate sub-component to keep the Browser tree from becoming too long. The generated Parts List in the drawing only lists it as "Fasteners" when I want a listing of all fasteners used.

I believe this is related to a previous post: http://forums.autodesk.com/t5/design-validate-document/parts-list-not-working/m-p/6383976

The workaround given was to create another drawing of the top-level component containing the sub-components. Indeed this does work as shown in the previous post, however, having two drawings for every assembly (and one essentially meaningless) seems wrong. For my project, the Parts List is essential to ensure the correct number of items are ordered.

Since the July update has recently been released, has there been any developments on this issue? Am I going to have to resort to manually counting all of my components to prepare a Bill of Materials?

Thanks for the post @S-R

Currently in drawings you can insert multiple "references" into a single drawing. From this perspective a reference can be an exploded view, or a different component filter -

I believe you can use this functionality to get the BOM you're looking for. Start by opening both the drawing you're working on and the model it references. In the Model workspace right click the Fasteners "assembly" to select Create Drawing - when the Create Drawing Command Dialog opens it should say "1 Selected" under the "Reference" menu. In the "Destination" menu, for the Drawing option, expand the dropdown, the drawing that is open and references the current design should be in that list. If you select it and create drawing, then the Fasteners assembly will come into the existing drawing.

Place a view of it, and now select the Parts List command, when you are prompted to select a view, select the Fasteners view, this should give you a Parts list containing just the Fasteners, you can now delete or move the Fasteners view off sheet.

I hope this gets you closer to what you need - please let me know if you have any questions/suggestions. We'll be improving this workflow in upcoming releases.

Best,

Thank you for your reply.

I implemented your suggested workaround, and while not ideal, it will suffice for this project. I look forward to future improvements to the drawing feature.

As a quick aside, is there a way to remove the "Material" column from the Parts List to give the "Description" column additional space?

Hi S-R,

This is not currently possible but we have functionality coming in the next update which will allow some table editing, you'll be able to stretch the table, adjust each column width, and also wrap the table if it gets too long. Soon...

Thanks,

Hi Byron,

The table editing functionality that is currently available is grip-edit of table and column width as well as table wrapping (Select the table and use the triangular grip in the center to resize the table height). For any other editing functionality my comment of "soon"may have been a bit optimistic. Sorry about that.

We are currently working on new table creation and editing (including add/remove columns and rows). I will check with the team on whether this editing will be available for the Parts List.

Thanks,
Chris
