Hi Mike

First, Thanks for your compliment on my design. I have been a
professional prototyping consultant for over 30 years and I have never been
a hack & grind type of guy,

especially if I am building for myself. There is nothing worse than having a
toy that you have to smack with a wooden mallet 4 or 5 times to get it to
work every time you

go to use it..

As to the poor performance, as I stated in the last Email, I repaired
some bad sub-assemblies and it did improve things a lot. It does not seem to
hang anymore, but some things

are slower than I think they should be. If I am moving a component, when I
hold the button on the arrow and drag it, the component follows right away
with no problem, but when

I then change to the other direction arrow to drag on another axis, It can
take anywhere between 10 to 20 seconds to respond. And it stays choppy and
slow. Caching problem maybe?

As to the upload thing, If I run the program and load my design I can
rotate it all around, look at anything I want, and even measure anything I
can see, but If I even turn off the "Main Frame"

layer with the light bulb so that I can get in to inspect something on the
"Gantry Frame" the Save Icon comes on and this means you have changed
something and it wants to save. If I then just exit

without pressing the save Icon, it tells me "Saving and Exiting" (probably
to disk). This usually takes 4 to 5 minutes, which I can Handle. After that
it comes up with a dialog box that says "uploads

in process do you still want to exit" with 3 choices Quit ---- save and
Quit---- Cancel. At this point, Save and Exit or Cancel are the only viable
options because if you exit now you will likely corrupt

the file. (I think this is what happened to my Version 3 file, and that
caused me to lose a lot of work). Now I am stuck for 40 min or so while it
uploads nothing. Most of the work I will be doing on this design from here,
is just inspecting and measuring as I source the buyable parts. If the
program gave you the option, (as soon as you press exit button in the first
place) of Save or No Save, then the program could just exit without saving
to hard drive or upload which is ok because nothing has been changed in the
design anyways, and it will load as it was the last time.

I am sending an Info file as you requested. I appreciate your help on this
matter.

Thanks,

Ed

Hello

I am experiencing some severe proformance problems. I have finished the project that I have been working on and over the next few

months I will need to make drawings of some parts that I have to hand machine. The problem is that the file has become unworkable.

It takes 5 minutes just to move a component, and I just tried to insert a sub assembly to complete the design and the program hung and

I had to close it with "Program Manager". My platform is as follows:

AMD 8 core processor running at about 4 GIG

Geforce GTX960 4 GIG Video card

32 GIG of Ram

Window 7 Profesional

Fusion 360

The engineer friend of mine, who recomended this program to me for personal use, runs A-360 on a comparable system at his workplace

and has no problems.

Has anyone run into this problem on large design files?

I would appreciate any help you can offer.

Update: I just read a similar post and will try a few of the suggestions but I'm not sure that the root cause is the same.

Would breaking up the design into 3 sections by saving 3 full versions and "Removing" 2 sections from each help lighten the load?

and is there any easy way of separating out individual components and placing them in my "PARTS" bin (directory) for processing?

Thanks, Edward

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for posting!

Could you share your design with me? I am curious to see if I encounter the problem on my machine. Instructions for how to share a design in Fusion 360 can be found here.

I am also curious as to what your graphics settings are. Could you click the ? in the upper right corner in Fusion 360 and select Graphics Diagnostic as shown below? Could you select the "Copy to Clipboard" button and paste it in your response?

There was also a great class on large design management in Fusion 360 given at Autodesk University by one of our QA engineers, Phil E. I have attached a document to this post and you can find a video presentation here.

As for separating the design into 3 sections, that could work, however when deleting a component in the Fusion 360 model you should consider whether the component has any dependencies. This means that the history of the component was referenced to create other features or components later in the timeline. If the component was used then the best practice for deleting is to right click the component in the browser tree and select "Remove". This means the feature will no longer be in the canvas or browser but it can still be referenced. If there is nothing referencing the feature then a hard delete can be done from the timeline. A hard delete will remove the feature for good.

As for separating individual components, you can right click any component in the browser tree and select "Save Copy As." You can then save a copy of that component to any of your projects.

Hope this helps!

Cheers,

Hi Mike

Thanks for your attention to my recent issue. I created a special parts
project and tried the "copy as" routine and it

works perfectly. I can inspect and fine tune (if necessary) all the sub
assemblies and create working drawings this way,

and it's as fast as a bullet, except for the constant uploading at every
turn which I will explain. I have no problem at all

sharing the project with you but if you're going to experiment with a file,
please use the v5-redundant backup file. If anything

goes wrong I will still have the finished file to work from. I will set it
up later tonight. The other question I have is about the uploading.

All I have to do is open my file, turn off a component to look at or measure
something behind it and the program has to upload the whole

file. This takes at least an hour with this project, and ties up my computer
because I can't leave the program while it's uploading a file that hasn't

really changed. Could the upload protocols not be changed to check the file
for changes before it uploads?

Thanks for your help,

Ed

Thanks for the update!

As far as I know, Fusion 360 does not perform an upload when you show/hide or move a component. I am not entirely sure why Fusion 360 is hanging when you perform those actions.

Could you share a public link to the design so I can investigate a little bit and see if I can reproduce the behavior on my computer?

Thanks,

Hi Ed,

You did it perfectly! Your design is very impressive. It is also a massive file!

As for the wait time when "hide/show"-ing and moving components, I am seeing a little bit of a delay, but at most it took a few seconds to update the design. This leads me to believe that something on your machine may be causing the extended delay.

Could you send me your system information file so I can take a more in depth look at your machine specs? I have included directions for obtaining the system information file below.

1. Launch %windir%\system32\msinfo32.exe
2. Select Save from the File drop down menu (CTRL + S)
3. Please reply with the resulting *.NFO file attached

Thanks,

Hi Ed,

Unfortunately, if you toggle the visibility of any of the Components, that'll dirty the document (as you found out). When this document is closed, it'll either ask you whether you want to save it, or, if you have the "Automatic version on close" option turned ON, then it'll save the document automatically. Looks like its doing the automatic save for you. You can turn OFF this option from the General tab in the Preferences dialog. That way, there won't be any unnecessary saves or uploads.

Thanks and regards,
