How to create vertical strut on the top of wooden structure between two panels?

Here is the strut and the file is attached. I have created it as component WoodA. However, it proved very hard to form the two thin extruding parts and also get the middle thick portion as one body all the while being able to get correct result when I change any of the parameters that affect this component.

I have attached the file so it is clear what I mean. This wooden structure was created only for me to learn about wooden joints: lap joint, dado, mortis and tenon.

Yes, I was able to make the part myself but, I just need to know from the experts, what would be the correct/easy/quick way to do this? I initially used mirror that joins the mirrored body with original. But somehow it would fail when I changed the Sx parameter. I don't know if Fusion allows projecting a sketch from one plan to another.

I don’t have access to fusion atm. So as reference to the picture.

Centre line sketch, Y plane, Projecting the stuff needed from a vertical post.

create the section profile for the bar, and the tenon.

Symmetric Extrude, the tenon distance,

Symmetric extrude, the bar as join.

Might help….

correct/easy/quick are somewhat subjective. FOR ME, I'm always thinking in the back of my head how difficult it will be for me to tweak the design a year from now when i can't remember anything about how I made a particular model. My work flow pretty much prioritizes that.

that means FOR ME it needs to be easy to find where to make/visualize changes.

now your model. when you made your component woodA, you cross referenced to a sketch in woodZ, (which violates the rule of thumb I posted in your other thread). Not to big a deal b/c this is a simple model. can get real confusing as models become more complexed. esp if you decide component woodZ is all wrong, so you delete it in order to remake it. oops, woodA broke. hmmm....

if you want to make changes to that tenon at the end, how difficult will it be to determine where to make the adjustments. not hard on a simple model, increasing difficult as models become more complex. in your model, to change the thickness and depth of the tenon, you have to find the sketch for the thickness, and also find the correct feature in the timeline to change the length.

attached is a model with my workflow. if you "show dimensions" for each of the 2 sketches at the very beginning, it's pretty easy to find how to change the thickness and length. just edit the dims circled(you don't even have to go into sketch edit mode. just double click directly on the dim)-

Yes, I read your input about the important rule of thumb after I had created this other model. In my original question, I have uploaded my completed wooden box. No part of a component uses a different component feature as reference in anyway. Thanks for the input.

@matrixofdyna wrote:
Is it OK to use the body of a component for a new sketch that will be used to change the body?...

if the source for references and the sketch itself are all in the same component this shouldn't be a problem.

I'll note that it's generally better to place sketches on the origin planes of the active component rather on faces when possible. not possible when you need a plane that's not parallel to an origin plane. also sometimes not possible when using with certain features (like sweep in some cases).

if you look at the model I posted, everything was extruded from just the 2 sketches on the origin planes. it wasn't necessary to position a sketch somewhere else.

I have made design from scratch. A new design where I made each component independant of the other. Everything is controlled from the the user parameter values. I have attached the file.

Since this is about practice of Fusion program, I am wondering, how would I create a vertical square cross section wood that is goes half way through SyB at 1/4 of its length and then fully through SyA? I am referring to the parts inside this attached file.

I used the planes at the origin if that sketch is supposed to be around there. If the sketch is supposed to be on raised plane, I just created new offset planes and used them for the drawing work. This was done in case the sketch is to be used to create a new component. The offset plane location is derived from user parameters and not from face of an existing component in this case.
