SKETCHES | what do the pink/purple dots/lines mean and why are they generated ?

i'm working on a project wher i'm iporting a DXF or SVG and then redraw the parts i need on a separate sketch.

so i import the DXF/SVG which creates a sketch for this.

i then create a new sketch on the same plane (world XY) and in this new sketch i draw lines by snapping to the parts from the imported sketch so i have a clean Fusion sketch to start modeling my features (it's a fretboard for a guitar and in the imported skecth the lines for the frets are too long so i redraw them in the new sketch to the correct length intersections). But on the first line it creates some purple dots/lines unrelated to the line i drew which seem to be projections of curves from the imported sketch.

here is a closeup of the first line with the dot and the unrelated generated lines:

and here are the other lines which draw fine without any pink/purple projected thingies:

what the heck is going on here ???

Check in preferences and make sure Auto Project is off.

ah, bugger ... the problem when switching off this option is that the cursor doesn't snap to the other sketch anymore. so none of the two options solves the problem. so in the end it was much faster to clean/edit the curves in Rhino, export a DXF and then import them back into Fusion ...

If the 2 sketches are on the same plane it should work. If they're on different planes what I normally do is use the project tool and just project the end points I need, might not be practical with the amount of curves you're working with though. I don't like auto project feature as you can end up with lots of double lines\curves I'd rather project just the points\curves I need.

What do the purple lines dots actually mean ? In my case turning that off had no effect. I see purple lines and dots in many area's with no clear explanation of what the issue is.

Study up on "Project"- the ability to imprint the shape of bodies and other sketch geometry on a Sketch. It's super useful. Say you need to know how the end of a shaft WAY over on the other side of a design relates to stuff you're sketching on this side-- just select the related edges of Sketch elements or bodies and press "P" for project. If you need the cross section of a form, use "Project Intersect". Need to capture a 3D shape? Say, the seam between two parts? Include 3D geometry is the tool. More basic, Project can be used to transfer Sketch elements from one Sketch to another. All of these Projected elements are drawn in purplish color, depending on your workspace Environment settings.

The Solution marked above points to a setting that may result in the incidental inclusion of Projected elements. If it looks like someone has been drawing parts of your Sketch in Burgundy wine, some projection's been going on. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the information, but this doesn't address the issue I (and I think he) had. I'm familiar with the project tool, and it's wonderful. However, after de-selecting the setting in question, I'm still getting burgundy lines being projected into sketches, sometimes massive ones unrelated to the current sketch.

Have you unchecked both auto project options in preferences? My post above is quite old and another opton, Auto Project Edges on Reference has been added.

Failing that can you download screencast and record what you're seeing.

Yes, I have both unchecked. I actually just downloaded Screencast but windows is now saying that the software is not designed to run on windows, so I have a new issue to solve.

@pmcnicoll Are you working so you're looking straight at the plane you're drawing on. Try this simple test, draw a cube and start a sketch on a face. With the view straight on using Look At you should not get any references or projections, rotate the view a bit and you'll be able to pick end and midpoints but the edges used will be autoprojected.
