extrude - what happened

Extrude no longer seems to work like it previously worked. Going into a solid it cuts. Going away from a surface it extrudes a solid. going from one plane through a solid it cuts and I can no longer make it join, worse yet I don't have a choice. What has happened? If this is a new feature, I don't want it.

Thank you for posting this! I am not very sure what issue you are experiencing but would you be able to attach some screenshots for me here? Screencast and a public link to the design would be more helpful for me to better understand the issue.

There have not been any recent changes to Extrude. This feature works the same as it always has, as far as I know. As Masa says, a video would help.

Extrude does auto-select the operation. If the Extrude intersects a solid, it will default to Cut. If not, it will default to Join/New Body. But, at any time, you can change this by changing the "Operation" setting in the tool. Here is a screencast:
