Hello all,

I did this one with a sketch first. Guess I'm learning. But as usual I'm having difficulty.

It's a piece of steel to mask an inset in a mold to sandblast a circular area. One side has protuberances which center it in the mold. The other has a drafted cylinder to shoot the sand thru.

I seem to do this all the time. I finish a drawing then have major trial and error trying to figure which cutting technique to choose. I want to cut the side with protuberances first. I tried 2D clearing and that wasn't it. 3D adaptive clearing just seems to cut the hole, around the hole, and the periphery of the stock, leaving everything else proud.

I go thru this every time.

Thanks,

Nelson

Okay, things gotta keep goin.

I'm using 3D adaptive clearing and 2D contour for the side with protuberances since I couldn't figure how to get the 3D to cut the hole.

I had a problem with the 3D until I checked Flat Area Detection.

Is there a way to just say "here's the model, you're gonna cut from this direction with this tool. Go ahead and do it. Ask for stepovers and stepdowns if you like" ?

This program works much better than what I was using before. I'm being very cautious. I don't want a machine/part crash.

Today when I posted code the editor window didn't open up as it has been doing. I forget where that switch is but it's scary when things change.

Looking at the file you uploaded you seem to have a few things wrong, I've done a screencast to show the setup of an adaptive clear.

A few things to note when clearing from the outside like this. For geometry set to none, then select stock contours leave nothing selected, the default will be the outer edge of the stock. Leave all other setting unselected. You had 2 faces selected under model in your contour op, you should not use model selection for this as shown in the screencast this makes the rest of the model invisible to the op and the toolpath goes through the job.

Take a look at posts #6&7 in this thread, it shows what model selection is useful for. Your example above is a good example of the trouble you can get into using model selection and only selecting part of the model.

Thanks Mark,

Here's what I wound up doing. I somehow got the 3D adaptive to recognize the slight step around the center by checking Detect Flat Areas.

I took a look at your second post and you might want to try an additive pocket to clear the cone shape. See attached file, don't post the drill op it's only there to make the simulation run correctly.

Thanks Mark,

I'm looking at my 3D Adaptive parameters. I don't see adjustment for stepover or a finishing option. Is this intentional?

Also in other types of operations when I do see the finishing option it's a little ambiguous. I would expect to see - Finishing yes/no and the depth of the final cut. Seems to be worded a little unclear to me.
