topic revolute joint with cylinder and trapezoid in Fusion Design, Validate & Document Forum

Let's say I have a house key whose hole is not round but a trapezoid. I want to put that key over a round pin or cylinder and have the key rotate about that pin. I can't seem to make that happen with the revolute joint (or any other joint). It always snaps to one of the edges of the trapezoid so that the pin appears to be half inside the trapezoidal hole and half inside the solid key. If I change the key to have a cylindrical hole I can make it work.

In reality the key would sloppily rotate about the pin as each side of the trapezoid moves around and hits the pin - this is fine - but if Fusion just displays the pin in the center of the trapezoid OR picks one edge of the trapezoid and rotates there I am fine with it as well.

Is there a way to create a revolute joint between a cylinder and a non-cylindrical shape?

-Tom

Okay, this is an easy one! I have created a video on how to create a Joint Origin and this is exactly what you need.

1. This is the link for the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyQRSjFnVMA

2. In the Joint Origin drop windows, you have a drop down menu called "Type". From the list, choose "Between two faces" and then you will be able to create a new Joint Origin in the middle of the Key hole. Just choose the two parallel faces of the Trapezoidal hole and Woalla 🙂

If you have any issue please let me know.

Cheers / Ben
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Did you find this reply helpful ? If so please use the Accept as Solution or Kudos button below.

Check out my video channel: Fusion 360: Newbies+
