topic DEFINE SKETCH PLANE in Fusion Design, Validate & Document Forum

I imported a CAD DWG into Fusion. The sketch is on the wrong plane... As it conveniently would be. As I search high and low for the infamous "Redefine sketch plane" button, it seems to be nowhere found. Right clicking on the sketch name gives me no option to redefine my plane.

This is a feature that should be easily located in software of this caliber. Perhaps the most basic of any drawing function.

TrippyLighting,

This is only working for sketches I draw. Not for imported DWGs. There is no option for my DWG to redefine its plane.

See attached please

When you import a DWG\DXF you have a Base Feature in the timeline, right click the Base Feature and select Edit and you can edit the features in the base feature similar to working with a direct modeling project. When you've finished editing just select the Finish Base Feature icon on the top toolbar.

Thanks for your reply,

No body, sketch, extrusion or what have you will provide the feature "redefine plane" when right clicking. Absolutely null.

Or you can create a screencast.

You probably imported this file by uploading it through the data panel and then opened the file available in the data panel after upload.

That file is considered imported geometry even if it just contains a 2D sketch. Such files are opened in Direct Editing mode.

Redefining the sketch plane is not available in DM mode.

Unfortunately I believe .dwg files can only be imported through the data panel not allowing you the same flexibility as .dxf files do 😕

Would you have this available in .dxf format ?

These can be inserted through the Insert menu directly into a Fusion 360 design from a file on your computer without the detour through the data panel.

Ned designs in Fusion 360 by default have the timeline turned on (Parametric Mode) and then it is easy to re-define the sketch plane.

Forget that. I'l make a screencast 😉

The trick is that you can export a sketch as a .dxf file.

So step 1 is in your file to select the sketch in the browser, right-click on it and export it as a .dxf.

Then you create a new design, which by default has the timeline enabled.

Insert->Insert .dxf, select a plane, pick the exported .dxf and select OK once it shows in the viewport.

Edit the sketch to move the center of the gasget to the origin point in the sketch and scale the sketch properly.

You're ready now to extrude the gasket into 3D geometry, redefine the sketch plane etc.

Thanks for your time and knowledge.

I suppose the DXF route will work. Kinda of frustrating that this can't be done with a DWG. DWGs are a pretty universal standard in the cad world. Nonetheless, glad we came to a solution.

Thanks again!
