I am trying to set the rest position on a leg for rotation joint .

One leg works and when adjusting settings to same for second leg it does not work .

I am trying to set rest position to fully down or open for all legs .

Thanks Gary

You have all these waring sings the UI throws at you including some revolute joints, possibly the ones you want to edit the limits on (?)

If you want for those to behave normally, you need to fix those errors first.

Hy Trippy , Thanks for reply ,

I decided to disassemble legs and start from scratch , first combining both sides of each leg into one and adding on leg bottom bumper , then using align tool to set leg pin in place whereas it was previously set using joint tool and then using align tool to set leg in place before using joint revolve which will be next after I get over next problem which is - I finished one leg then used pattern tool to set all 5 legs in place , deleting previous examples and also joints ,,,

, problem is they now all react as one unit , I save time by doing it this way but only if I can somehow separate or break bond ? between each leg so that they will react separately when I apply the revolve joint . I could use copy paste to bring each leg in but that presents a new set of problems with all legs somehow reacting to anything I do to the original component , per example if I delete the original all the copy's delete with it , Not sure why this occurs but it does , There needs to be a way to separate copy's and also parts of circular , rectangular patterns after making them .

As is now if I apply the revolve joint to #1 leg all the other legs react to this ones revolve and then revolve around leg number one 's center pivot point .

Let me know if you have a answer to this problem .

I would put on share but as this will be going to Kickstarter as project i would rather not do so . I am also at about 98 % finished now and only need legs completed to finish and publish .

I am thinking I may be able to take each copied individual leg and save as component in order to separate ///??

Hey @Anonymous,

When you created the Circular pattern, you created new bodies (with no connection to each other, they are just a copy). Those bodies you need to turn into Components by Right click on them and choose "Create components from bodies". Create a component called "Legs" and put all of them in there.

From this point, you can join each of them with no problem. Position your legs in the collapsed position (starting position), and that will make creating the joints much easier and consistent.

Let us know if you still have problems.

The reason I asked for you to share your design is because in your screencast you have a long list of bodies that don;t belong to any component. That could indicate that you are not following a proper workflow.

However, that is hard to evaluate just by looking at a short screencast.

I made 3 nice long screencast showing how badly it wigs out , Whether it's because of a circular pattern , Copies , Alignment . I'm not sure because of so many possible Possibilities "
I went through everything carefully and as methodically as I could after wiping all the tears off my computer and an occasional trip to the restroom to silently scream - Public Restroom "
The screen casts are what the #1 - what the #2 and what the #3
I seem to have gotten most of the problems taken care of but one leg stops in open position which is what I want , the others stop -rest in closed and one other stops -rests in half way .

Thank You.
Gary Brown

Hy Trippy , I set up Public link I think ..with downloadable settings

Here's one to a separate cap that fits which i intend to put solar panel on and for use as solar light since fresnel lenses should do well in refracting light outward as well as inward .

This cap is to be OEM for use in connecting other flasks - Yeti Rambler - Columbia Sports Flask .etc..

I also intend to make a candelabra of sorts to hang Shish Kabobs .

Another to hang Hot Dogs .

And another to hang a cage to hold vegetables .

The cap being a main focal point as it will be used for multiple purposes , with the only changed out part being the base that in solar light is being used to hold battery compartment .

The battery compartment piece will be changed on typical cap -not solar light but cap that is currently in main body ,and have a connector to use to hang The Hot Doggery , The Vegetater , The Shish Kabobber , The Occasional Furry Little Animal That Strays Into Camp Cooker etc...

http://a360.co/2cuDCKj

http://a360.co/2cXGIH5

The main use of course is to heat water and to use Main body to store entire unit overnight to help insulate against heat loss .

The use of this whole thing is as solar heater using Fresnel Lenses as heat source , I have additional convex lenses that I want to install behind Fresnels for additional refraction of suns rays and I am possibly looking at doing interior reflective layer on cylinder wall to further help retain heat but that would interfere with ability to see food as it cooks so possibly not .

Other file is main body etc..

I really need to get legs in upright position so that I can take snapshots etc ..

I will be starting on set of log daddy legs that will wrap around exterior of cylinder and extend upwards to cap

I've made backups to separate folder in my data panel .

I welcome any ideas , help from anyone

Thanks Again Gary

It would have been great if you'd have come to the Forum much earlier.

The workflow you followed was:

Sketch -> Body -> Component

A better workflow is this:

Create component(Empty, activated) -> Sketch -> Body. This is:

Fusion 360 R.U.L.E #1
When in doubt, before doing anything, create a component and make sure it's activated.

All objects created after activating the component such as sketches, bodies, construction geometry, joint origins, etc. are created in that component.

This has several advantages:

On activation the timeline is filtered to show only those items in the timeline that pertain to that component. That will make the quickly growing timeline much easier to work with.

If a component is exported to the data panel with "save as" this will also export the complete parametric design history.
The joints in the "Assemble menu only work with components.

Drawings can only be created from components

Only components show on the BOM

When another component needs to be edited for example to add geometry, it should be activated before doing so.

Fusion 360 R.U.L.E #2
Name your stuff!

You did not follow these guidelines and in essence the effect is total disorientation. It is very difficult to navigate this design quickly and figure out what sketch belongs to which body.

Also instead of moving components, either with the move command or simply by dragging it around in the viewport, in several cases you moved the body within the component, which moves it away from the origin of the component. This is likely the reason why you see some of the joints behave strangely.

If you single-left-click on a 3D object in the viewport something highlights. Either a point, an edge, or a face of that 3D object. If you watch the browser you'll see the blue breadcrumb highlighting will lead to a body

To highlight a component you need to double-left-click on an object. The highlighting in the viewport will look distinctively different and in the browser you'll be able to see that a component is highlighted.

This far into the design I am not sure what other advise I could provide to move forward.

This design has more than a few problems. If the above would not been concerning already, I just ran a "Modify -> Compute all" and the result is pretty devastating. In the error pane to the right are 32 or so error messages.

Hi @Anonymous,

My advice for you is very simple.

1. Follow @TrippyLighting guidelines!

2. In this size of assembly, don't add the joints in the end. Add the joints along the way, it will save you time and will help you spots problems in the design.

3. Open a new file and recreate the model. This time, you won't make the same mistakes and if you have ANY question to hesitate contacting us.

Good luck 🙂

P.s

Your model looks really cool.

This has all been Autodesk's fault as their is no way to create a folder structure . As I am working if I make a new part it is simply dumped into browser in a random nonsensical unorganized quagmire of endless body's and components that I can do nothing with as far as organizing .
I have never worked with a program that had no way of organizing the content and have repeatedly complained about this in posts .

If I could have kept a organized file structure from the beginning this would not have happened .I will try to rebuild it from scratch -hopefully after Autodesk rebuilds the browser but for now I have become desperate to simply finish what I have in order to get this posted to Kickstarter and then go from there .
I am horribly behind On this project and it is all due to the horrific browser from hell .
I made two major mistakes with design in beginning that have caused problems - I separated bottom section of design to a new file and did not realize that when I did it resized to meters from previous file using inches , I wrongly assumed that it had changed to a meters measurement but was still equal to the inches measurement in previous file . This was because preferences default was set to meters and I did not realize that the change i made to inches for previous file had reverted back to default setting when i added new file .

The only way to save file was to resize using scaling tool which worked somewhat on body's -components , but did not resize construction planes or sketch planes , there being no concrete folder structure there was simply a long list of sketches that may or may not go somewhere or somewhere else .
Other major mistake was to recenter design using align tool , seemed to work fine at first but then increasingly caused problems such as seen when legs and other components are off floating in space .
If I had a workable folder structure I could have possibly addressed these problems because I may have been able to isolate them individually by way of having an idea as to where the problem was , But without a folder structure it is impossible to correct any of these as I simply can not find the problems in the first place .
Thank You.
Gary Brown

Hey @Anonymous,

Regarding the folder structure, you can use a Component as a folder and put as many components as you need 😉

I don't know how much time you spent to learn about F360, but as you already know by now, the workflow and structure is a bit different than other CAD programs.

I don't know if you checked my YouTube channel yet, I have made videos specifically for new people who wants to know how to start working with F360, you should check them out.

You are not the only one who made those mistakes, which is why we are here. If you are not sure about something, please let us know.

Think about it like that... There's nothing better than Learning By Doing! 🙂
