I'm having an issue extruding a face in model mode. I'd like to create a 'branch' sticking out cleanly where this face is:

If i do it right away it becomes all skewed, like so:

if i add edges around the place where i want to extrude, like so:

the extrude is even worse:

what do i have to do this cylinder's geometry to have a clean branch off similar to what happens when you create a pipe with an intersection?

Thank you!

Hi @Anonymous,

It looks from the images that you are working in Sculpt (TSplines) mode. There are a couple of ways to do this (and maybe more than these)

1. you can create a branched pipe using the pipe command directly:

2. closer to what you are trying to show in your images, you can create a branch from a face using "Alt drag" in the Edit Form command:

Hopefully one of these techniques will get you moving forward.

Jeff

this was the best i could do after adding a ton of edges, but it still doesn't look as clean as when you use the pipe tool 😞

Thanks Jeff, that's what i was trying to do. I don't want to create a new pipe, because my main shape is already created. I was using the alt drag tool and it was coming out all deformed rather than a clean branch like on the example you provide.

Interesting. I know the "Make Uniform" tool can help in a lot of cases. Usually, when I get strange geometry like that, I find that it helps to look at the body in "Box Mode" (Utilities -> Display Mode). Sometimes you can quickly see that your model has overlapping edges, or some control frames that are too big or too small, etc. I can usually get the model to behave much better by tweaking things in box mode.

Jeff
