Hi-

I'm having an issue that I can't seem to figure out regarding projecting sketch geometry from one component onto a sketch of another component.

I'm making an adapter plate that mates a servo motor with a gear box of a different size.

With the adapter component activated, I select a face of the adapter plate as the sketch plane, then I select the mount holes of the gearbox thus projecting the hole points onto the sketch plane of the adapter plate.

In theory if I move the gearbox, say rotating it 10 degrees, the sketch entities on the adapter plate should move too, since they are projected from the gearbox

What am I missing here?

Screencast attached

Thanks,
Matt

@Anonymous

"If I understand you correctly" let me make a screen cast on a way you can do it. The key is the gearbox needs to be one components and the sketch in another, then when you move the gearbox select component move from the options and make sure both components are selected. That will move the geometry and the projected sketch together.

What you did is, you projected a shape from a body and when you move the body, the projected sketch doesn't move with it and thank god it's not happening 🙂

I can't give you the details on why it's happening, but I can tell you this... if you could turn the sketch that makes the holes On and use it to project the holes, then the projected sketch will move with the original.

Ben.

BTW, you don't have to create holes. You could use this technique in this video as well: How to subtract solids, using Combine & Press Pull
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulWdXl4X3oo

But you must remember, you are working with a linked component and what you can do with it in an assembly is limited!

It will save you sketches and time 😉

@Anonymous

I don't know of a way to make this work.

Personally I would rotate the gear box then do the projection after the rotation.

I think there was discussions within the dev team about this so maybe they will chime in.

As @Beyondforce stated you are working with linked components and as of right now you can not edit the linked components in the assembly.

Hi-

I did this all the time in solid works and it was especially useful in managing assemblies where individual component screw holes mate two components. Hopefully there is a method!

Matt

Matt, you can do it. You just need to break the link (if it's not a big issue for you) and project the Hole's sketch.
The dev team is working on making linked components editable in an assembly, but it will take some time 😞

The key component that you are all missing is time.

The timeline is used for this kind of thing. You need to manage "when" the servo moves. It must be prior to the creation of the sketch.

Currently this is what you are creating/experiencing.

Insert part > create plate > create sketch with projections from inserted part > move inserted part and Capture Position. (you can see that the move comes after the projection)

Here is what you need to do:

Insert part > create plate > move inserted part > create sketch with projections.

You can move the timeline marker to achieve this in your file by moving the marker prior to the sketch with projections if you've already made it.

I'll post a screencast in a couple hours.

Thanks,
