I'd like to draw brake cables.

I started with a tangent plane, then used Pipe.

Looks good, but that's just one leg of many.

Maybe there's a better way?

HI @Anonymous,

I would use the Spline tool, because it can draw in the sketch 3D environment. So it doesn't really matter on which plane you are sketching 😉

When you have one side ready, then you can just mirror it to the other side. The Pipe tool is a good choice 🙂

Will give it a shot. Never used it in 3D. I looked quickly and only found the example with the pitcher...which is 2D.

I'll devote time to this later this morning.

In order to draw a spline in 3D space you still need to start a sketch on a plane. It is a little counterintuitive as the spline will not adhere to that plane.

Then, when in the sketch make sure you have "#D Sketch" checked in the sketch pallete.

YOu'll start sketching on the plane and can move spline points on the plane by dragging them with the mouse cursor. However, to move the spline points out into 3D space you'll need to elect them and invoke the move tool. Then you can use the 3D manipulator handles to move the spline point in space. This is a little cumbersome at the moment.

So frustrating.

Trying to "click and drag" the points on the line, and of course it doesn't work.

Neither does trying to rotate a handle.

A 3D sketch can be as simple as finding the projected intersection between 2 2D sketches.

Sketch 2D path from Top View and from Side View.

Find the 3D intersection and then Sweep along the 3D intersection path.

Easy to edit too!

I gave up trying to futz with the 3D on the front.I used a tilted plane that crosses the centers of both the lever and the caliper. Good enough.

No-can-do with the rear. It emanates from the brake lever, swoops down then disappears into the frame--a perpendicular plane.

I'll try what you propose.

There are several ways to do this 3D intersection.

Examine this from the Top View and from the Right View.

I used a similar method to do the piping on this seat.

Honestly, I'm winging it and making some headway.

I figured out that some of the points like to adhere to things, so I must delete the constriction then use the Move command to move it. Weird.

Rear looks okay. Had to redo the front as I had been doing the process under the handlebar Component--which was a mistake. Along the way I re-positioned the caliper and the end of the cable was floating out in nowheresville after clicking on the main view.

This solution is what worked (for me) the best. And I tried them all. Ugh.

I always must go back to my same old, same old: it's "easy" when you know how to do it. It's the LEARNING how to do it--why this does that and that does this--is what is "difficult" and time consuming.

I got a couple funky error windows, that had me just undo it all and start again. Now, I can breeze through another round of 3D spline blindfolded!

Is there a way to show an EXPLODED view of the drawing--I mean the FULL drawing? Like you'd see in a technical reference book.

Sorry for the misspelling! It's called 3Dconnexion mouse 🙂
The reason that I'm asking is because, this mouse will help you tremendously with your 3D design. Since I got this mouse, I'm more productive and I'm able to do things that I couldn't have done before or it was very difficult to do.
Specially when you are doing 3D sketching, this mouse makes all the difference.
This is one of the reason, why we sometimes say "it's easy" 😉 This mouse let us do things you can't imagin. You don't have to take my word for it, just ask anyone else in here that has it.

I typically say all those positive things about Hershey's bars (with almonds).

I'm not that much of a user to invest the time and money on that mouse. Looks cool though.

I'm just about finished with this drawing, so it's on to the next phase.

Any suggestions on getting an exploded view of the components that make up this drawing?
