I'm going through the tutorials on the site and I get to this mirroring excercise and it's nonesensical. Sometimes things can be selected and other times not. There's no obvious reason. Here's an attempt to simply mirror something in sketch

What am I missing?

I had started recording this screencast, so I might as well post it. Here is a sketch similar to yours, showing how mirror works.

I don’t understand how to get back into a ‘sketch’ without having to call up a sketch tool like line, then select a plane, draw a line, then delete it so I can get to what I wanted to do in the first place. If I select stop sketch and then later want to get back into a sketch I was working on - how is that done?

There’s no feedback window that let’s me know what’s going on. It seems I have to constantly surmise what’s likely the case.

When I’m in a window that allows me to select items then I assume I’m where I need to be. However after ascertaining certain elements can be selected and then trying to run a command on them they’re no longer selectable.

How am I to determine these things?

Just to give you sense of how silly things are at this point: I cannot use the forum site in Safari - for some reason none of the links will work. I can get the forum site functional in Firefox but the content of any message is displayed over the background image making it unreadable unless all the text is highlighted. I can't simply reply to email as the return address is 'noreply'. So I have to read your response in Safari, copy the url and paste it into FF and then send you a response.

I've screen capture app, but it insists on its own .xxx and in order to send a shot I've to export it, to my desktop or email it to myself and save the attacment to the desktop and then attach it to the communication.

Here's what the forum looks like in Firefox:

Hello! Sorry to hear you are running into trouble.

I think what @TrippyLighting is correct about not being in the same sketch. You can click, select, etc other sketch entities while in a sketch, but you cannot manipulate them. The solution to this is to edit the original sketch. I made a quick screencast of how to edit sketches:

Also, here's how you include a screencast:

And lastly, make sure firefox is up to date. I use Chrome primarily, but I checked out the forums in firefox and didn't see any issues like you saw:

Hope this helps!

Best,

I have extensive experience with a number of CAD/modelling systems and at first I was asking myself why the program was so awkward to use. I have since realised that I have to change my way of thinking when using Fusion 360.

After a couple of weeks and a number of sessions I am now finding the program very well put together and suggest people take the time to learn how to operate it correctly as it is a joy to work with.

A good example is my old CAD systems spline tools, it has three but Fusion 360 has only one which threw me at first but now I find that I can do everything I need with the one the Fusion 380 team has given us.

Another example is the alignment function; it was driving me crazy at first because I did not understand it, now I find it enhances my workflow.

The Sketch mode gave me numerous problems at first but once I understood the function fully I now love it.

I have attached an image of a self disengaging ramp clutch with shear capability that I have used to test PTC Creo, FormZ, Geomagic design, Solidface, Solidedge, etc and Fusion 360 handled it smoother than all of them.

Craig

@Anonymous

Hello Craig,

Wrote this some time ago, as learning goes, Fusion 360 is no different than other real software tools, expect and accept a learning curve. How steep this curve will be depends on experience and learning speed.

Once you get used to a specific software, changing to something else will cause some "getting used to", habit, muscle memory, etc.

The major advantage with Fusion 360 is not that it is great software, well, actually it is super great software, but at first contact this may be not so obvious.

The interaction you get with Autodesk, the Fusion 360 Dev Team and this forum are the real advantages. Not to mention the very regular updates. Still some ironing out to do, for sure, but it is getting better with every update.

Just give yourself the time to really learn Fusion 360 the right way. Once you go Fusion 360, you'll never go back...

Best regards,

Ludo
