To add to what Jeff said, if you have some arbitrary blob or super sophisticated shape T-Spline that does not have distance plane, the scale tool allows you to pick the origin point. Thus make sure you design objects that might be scaled with the origin in the location you might use as the center for scaling.

The attached screenshot shows the manipulator, I have two questions please.

The first is concerning the lack of scale handles and there are normally more icons next to the transform category in the control box?

On my Win 10 pro machine the scale handles always show up and there are a number of icons next to the transform category?

The second is concerning the manipulators positioning, why does it not snap to the centre of an object and is it possible?

This is a real problem especially when scaling an object that is not a conventional shape as the manipulator works off a point on an edge and not in the centre as is normally needed.

Hi @Anonymous,

The image you posted is for the Move command in the Modeling environment. This command does not support scaling. There is a separate Scale command in that environment:

I suspect the question relates to the Edit Form command in the Sculpt environment, which does support scaling:

Regarding positioning, it depends how you select the object. By default, in Body Move, if you pick in the graphics area, it positions the manipulator at the pick point. You can position the manipulator at the component origin of the body by selecting it in the browser. However, you can always reposition the manipulator using the "Set Pivot" sub-command in the Move command:

Hi Jeff,

I have been using the Edit form in Sculpt mode for the last few days and as you mentioned I got locked in to that manipulator.

How about a full time manipulator with scale functions that the user could turn off when they wanted to?

With regards to repositioning the manipulator, I use Set Pivot a lot but I often have the need for the manipulator to be at the objects centre of gravity, uniform scaling around the centre of an object is very handy.

It sounds as if there is no way to position the manipulator at the objects centre as we cannot snap to the centre of an object with the Set Pivot?

Craig

I created a shape and then selected it in the browser and the manipulator is in the position you see in the attached screen shot.

I would like that manipulator at the centre of the object, please tell me there is a way to do that?
