Spline Scaling

Is there a way to successfully scale an edited spline. Attached, a short screencast indicating the problem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Not sure if I understand the problem correctly but what I did in that case is create a line to connect the two spline endpoints and then inserted a point at the midpoint of that line.

When I scaled the spline I selected the spline and then selected the inserted point as the scaling point.

Thanks for the reply. As soon as one of the spline handles is edited, regardless of your method, the scaling goes awry!

I took another look and now see what you are talking about; the front of the spline does something weird, I tried it on my system and I do not get the same behaviour, when I scale at that point the spline acts naturally.

That is weird. So just to be sure, after drawing the spline and tweaking it using the node handles, you are still able to successfully scale the spline?

No problem John,

the second time I tried it I did not use the line to connect the spline ends and I tweaked the spline quite a bit with the node handle.

When I used the same point for scaling as you did, the spline scaled as it should without any issues, I think you need to get tech support involved in this as it sure is a strange one.

Hi, im a newby here and in Fusion 360 and i have the same issue but i cant solve it.

Here is my original bike scketch. I dont know how to constrain splines and i really dont want to lost time doing that because this is a concept study so i want to change the shape on the go.

I start my sketch without worry about dimension, but now i need to scale that and when i do that i figured this screen problem. I tried to search in Forum for a solution and i try to deactivate the tangent handles but when i do the shape changes.

I use Rhino and this is a very easy and normal process when i working on a concept form, but i need help to find how to solve this problem.

Hi @Anonymous - yes any scaling of the spline beyond a factor of approx 1.2 contorts the original shape beyond usability. I think I have figured out a work around. After you have completed your unscaled sketch - Stop Sketch - and go into the Patch Workspace. Then, Create --> Extrude and select all the sketch curves and extrude by any nominal amount (say 5mm). Then Modify --> Scale and select the extruded faces as the entities to scale and the origin point (turn on Origin) as the scaling point. The shapes maintain their shape no matter the scale factor. You can then go back the Model Workspace, create a new sketch and project the scaled up profiles onto the sketch. Little bit of pt and time but it's working for me.

Hello, I had the same problem described in this thread. Thank you @Anonymous your solution worked for me, this method does not preserve the curves anchors sadly.

Hi @teodoro.sandoval.p you are quite correct, anchor nodes are lost. Guess the unscaled shape will need to be exactly correct. Let's hope the Fusion boffins can fix this sometimes irritating bug.

No one wants to bother with constraints. The tool requires them. You'll have to reconcile that for yourself. The Sketch-Body-Sketch transfer method can be used as the basis/guide for a new Sketch, allowing for refinement at scale. It seems the obvious better practice is attending to scale/dimension from the start.

I just got bit by this as well. I took a picture of what I wanted to model, used splines to sketch it out. Then went to scale it to the various dimensions I wanted and it was totally unrecognizable. The workaround of extruding to 3D then scaling is awkward as I lose my ability to change the spline and have the 3D part change on the fly. Does anyone have a better method than this? Thanks!

Yes. Once you have the image inserted as a Canvas, calibrate the canvas. Then start sketching.
