The reason it wont shell properly is because of the claws, they are small and pointed and would cause a geometry overlap which is why it crashes or fails. If you create another sketch without the pointed tips it shells fine. It also doesn't help that there are tons of errors in your claw sketch.

Hello everyone,

I am having a peculiar problem.

I am trying to create a simple mold and, to test the principle, created a design.

Shelling the back part is no problem:

However, shelling the front part with split and pushed geometries crashes the software:

I was able to circumvent the problem by shelling then pushing the inside of the mold, however in order to save as much material as possible, I'd like to be able to shell it as it is.

Anyone ran into the same problem?

Hi @Anonymous,

Thank you for sharing and your screencast was also really good for me to better understand.

I’ve looked into your model and figure out something.

In conclusion, we can’t apply to shell with 5mm on your model. Because the shape would have large topology. Therefore when doing offset to the claw, it couldn’t create it. Please take a look at image below. It was succeed when having 2mm.

One more thing, I figure out your imported sketch would be overlapped so I created a new sketch along with your original sketch.

Overlapped.

And if you want to use 5mm shell, it needs “patch” environment. I’m sharing how to create it and my file. Please take a look at this.

Hello @ahreum.ryu,

I did try a 2mm shell, however this happened:

http://autode.sk/2fAOX0k

I even tried a 1mm push on a 3mm shell, to no avail, there seems to be a problem with the computation here.

Thank you for your reply. However, as you can see in the inside of the mold I shared, your answer does simply not answer my question.

I would need a 3mm shell to be created around the features, for such an inside to actually mold the candle:

Which is unfortunately not quite what the end result of what you propose me to do.

Thinking I was being under the wrath of the CAD gods because I was lazy and that I just imported a SVG file, I did redraw the paw mark on the geometry with a much simpler splice-based sketch, sadly to no avail.

@Anonymous

I still don't understand why your doing this. You say it is to save material but we're talking about maybe 0.20 cents of material and your molds will be weakened and more likely to tear meaning you will get less candle castings per mold. I can figure this out for you but it seems like a huge waste of time.

At that point it is more a "why isn't it possible when the geometries seem simple enough" than a practicality standpoint. But I see your point.

If you're interested you can go ahead, otherwise I'll let it go and use the workaround I found 😃
