Reducing component tree size

Greetings,

I would appreciate some tips on how to reduce the size of the component tree as I am nowhere near the end of the bike model and I have a small forest.

I have components such as the two grips but one cannot be dragged into the other, same thing with the spokes, I have six in the component tree but would only like one.

Have I lost control of the tree due to the way I started out or can this be rectified?

Treat it just like the OS file system. Create a new component, then drag and drop the previously created components into the new component.

Hi @Anonymous,

It is very easy to do. You create a new component, call it for example "Forks" and drop all the Forks components inside. You do the same for all the other similar components.

Thanks to you both, the bike tree is now very clean.

I have to be honest and say that the component tree structure gives me a headache, I can understand there being multiple folders at the object level but once an object has been changed to a component I would hope to see only the component.

Should the origin and body folders be displayed at component level or would it be better to only have the actual component?

Really you should create the component first then the sketches and bodies so the component is as self contained as possible, personally I never use create components from bodies as the components made that way are not reuseable. Have you looks through the Rule #1 thread.

It would be easier to follow Rule #1 if the default for extruding was New Component instead of New Body.

Not really, your sketch should be in a new component already. If you're extruding from a sketch in another component you're probably not sticking to Rule #1. The exception would be making several components from a master sketch in a main component but I'd try to avoid that as much as possible.
