Wrapping a decal

Hi,

I have attached an image of a sphere with an image of the earth used as a decal, the front looks great but the back is not well, is there any way to fix this?

Thanks for sharing the picture.

That looks like a great idea. Could you check if "chain faces" has been enabled?

Have you may tried to use an Appearance like "Wood/Finished" and change the texture image and size?

It would be great if you could share your *.png with us?

We may find a workaround for that.

Hi Mike,

yes I played with the chain faces option and it made no difference either way and I did try the edit texture idea after you suggested it but I could not get that to work either.

I got some very strange results when I tried that method, hopefully one of the more experienced users can get it to work?

It is a pity the decal method does not work as it does a fantastic job, really quick and a very good quality.

Your time has not been wasted though as I was starting to recreate another design I test modelling systems with.

I had run into a problem at the start because I wanted to map a Red Bull image to a drinks can in a tile fashion but did not know how to do it until you suggested the edit Appearance method.

I have attached an image of the design completed in Blender and the start of it in Fusion 360 which has been helped by your tip.

To be fair not many programs can wrap the earth around a sphere with one click, I can do it in Blender but it takes a little work, nobody can look behind the earth so who will know?

As far as your earth goes that is easy to do with a texture map, I'm baffled as to why you would want to use a decal for that.....

Just finding my way Phil, the decal method did a fantastic job quality wise very quickly.

I did try the texture map method but could not get that to work, I gave it a fair go and got some very weird results.

Hi Phil,

Thanks for taking the time but I still get the weird results, the first screen shot shows how my image does not correctly wrap itself around the sphere as yours does.

The second screen shot shows what happens when I remove the tile option, I did spend some time on this yesterday but could not get it to work and have followed your steps today with the same result.

Ok you didn't follow my video. You need to make the width of the texture double the height and adjust the numbers to match the size of your texture.

please disregard the last foolish message as I was in modelling mode when I tried it due to missing your written instructions.

I have now got to grips with it, thanks again I will post the completed model once I have finished it so you can see what I wanted it for.

The texture mapping options are not in the material editor. You need to select the texture map control button and set it to spherical and make sure your sphere is selected then you need to hit the axis button in the dialog box then it will allow you to select the axis.

It depends on the map projection you use, the ones that are more oval shaped seem to do well, but you should try them all.

Never mind, just realized that since the decal is distorted a lot, you need a projection that distorts it in the other way, and since map projections are meant to reduce distortion there isn't a map projection that exists, if you find a map projection shaped like a flattened X then tell me
