When exporting an Inventor model to .OBJ format, a material file (.MTL) is also created.

When will Fusion 360 also create this material file? When viewing the Fusion 360 file in A360, the materials can be seen. When you select Download > OBJ, only the OBJ file is sent? When will this be corrected?

Hi,

I want to showcase my 3d model in augmented reality through the application Augment. I need to export a .obj file with the texture from Fusion 360 in order to successfully use this file in Augment. When I export a .obj file do not get the texture in my mode. How do I export the material or texture file from Fusion 360?

An option for you might be to take your model over to Sketchfab and texture in your browser.

I use Showcase for this - I can export FBX files out and then take them to something like Substance Painter to spice them up a bit.

I am trying to import my 3D model into Augment, an augment reality application. Augment accepts the following file format: .obj, .stl, .dae, .zae, .kmz . I need to export texture files (preferable as .mtl) and archive them with the .obj file in order for my model to work with the augment application. Is there any way I can export material files from either Fusion360/Showcase or any other software?

Yes, but you'll have to export the geometry from Fusion 360, import the Fusion 360 model into that other application, apply your material there and then export the .obj from that application.

Blender would be such a software.

If that is at all a practical approach is another question.

I think they don't see the value in it and I think want you to rather use the internal render engine.

@PhilProcarioJr @TrippyLighting and I were asking for UV unwrapped OBJ models since ages.

What you could do is this:

Export your model as STEP

Get MOI 3D which is a light weight Rhino clone but has the best OBJ mesher on the market.

Export the model to OBJ

Load it in what ever app you want to texture and then send it to your Aug app.

The problem with Fusion is while it has a great foundation I think Autodesk only sees it going towards mechanical design needs

and your task here is not what engineers mainly would do. Kinda makes sense but is unfortunate because an OBJ export with UV unwrap is no magic.

MOI still doesn't help me export and .OBJ file with it's associated .MTL file with all the colors. Sure, it's a great editor and OBJ creator. But I wasted an hour in MOI coloring all my parts, then exported to OBJ only to get a single OBJ file with no MTL color instructions.

My god, why is it so hard to get a color model out of all these 3D CAD programs.

I am also trying to created a 3D model for an Augmented Reality app. To get one in color, it must be OBJ + MTL. The only program to create the OBJ + MTL pair together in a .ZIP file was TINKERCAD. But, TinkerCad's MTL file used transparent colors, so my model doesn't show up. If I drop a grey texture file into the .ZIP, then my whole model shows up, but it's grey of course.

I'm going crazy trying to find something that will output a proper MTL file with the OBJ model.

That is very easy to answer. CAD software works mostly with BRep. .obj Files contain mesh files.

The difference is that these are very different, not directly compatible geometry types.
