Hello, I was following this tutorial "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO9THvRz9oc" and at 2:50 I can't replicate the distance to, it gives an error. I tried to use pull instead of extrude but with the same results.

When I pick symmetric and join, the distance option disappears. I then try two sides instead of symmetric and I have the "distance to" option but when I choose the "to" face, it gives the error.

Is this a bug?. Im not the only one with this problem, there´s at least one person that tried to follow the tutorial and had the same bug.

Im using the latest version of fusion and Im using a Mac.

Thanks.

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for posting. The Extrude command has undergone a UI facelift since that video was recorded. However, you point out a good question that I will need to research: You cannot, as near as I can tell, do a "to object" symmetric Extrude. You can, however, do a two-distance to object extrude. Here is a simple screencast of a similar workflow:

Hi @Anonymous,

Thanks for posting and welcome to the Fusion 360 community!

I want to start off first by saying that that tutorial video you are working off of is a little out dated. The modeling techniques discussed there should still be relevant but we have made some changes to the user interface of Fusion 360 since August.

It looks like the option for "Extent: To" has been removed for symmetric extrusions. I do not know EXACTLY why that option was removed, however the fact that it was removed makes sense to me. If you were to select a face to extrude to for a symmetric extrusion, it would probably try to extrude both sides to that face, turning it into a one sided extrusion. It would probably also cause some funky things to happen with Fusion 360.

I believe that this functionality was moved to two sided extrusions to allow for the selecting of two entities to extrude to - one selection for each side. In your situation, I believe that you are simply making the incorrect selection for the "Chain Faces" option. There are two options here - chain faces and extend faces.

Chain faces will make the extrusion exactly match the shape of the body that you are extruding up to. The screenshot below does a better job of explaining it than I am 😛

Extend faces is for when you want the extrusion to go up to the selected face and not extrude anymore. Screenshot explanation below 🙂

Before anyone says anything, I know that in my screenshots I am using a one sided extrusion. The same concept still applies for a two sided extrusion.

I hope this helps!

Cheers,

Hey @Anonymous,

Looks like Jeff and I had been working on a reply at the same time! Sorry about spamming you with notifications!

I also just noticed something about the tutorial video that you shared. If you watch carefully, at 2:53 after they have selected a symmetric extrude and set the extent to "To", the extrude operation automatically changes from a symmetric extrusion to a two-sided extrusion.

I hope this helps!

Cheers,

Hi,

Thanks for the help.

I did tried the two sides and it didn't work.

Thanks to you, now I know why. I had to check the chain face option.

Thanks once again for the help.
