Needs 2 extrusions to get your result, taper both circles as a solid, then cut the axle.

In your example selecting a donut - the result is totally logical.

Hi Guys,

I hope you could help me understand this behavior. When extruding a circle with a hole inside, then using the Taper command, the hole increase or decrease opposite to the Tapered direction.

I think taper works so it tapers all the faces into or out of the solid, this is how as a mould maker I need it to work. I can see what you would like but I'm not sure how you could have the extrude dialog cover both ways. I guess you'd need a taper parallel or something.

I find it very odd, that the tapper is effecting the inside hole as well. I just wanted the outside tappered!

How is the extrude command going to know which face you want tapered? Next time you might only want the inner hole tapered or both. If you only want one face you'll have to use draft, the extrude dialog would probably get a bit confusing if you start adding face selection.

You are right, which is why, logically it should tappered the inside to the same direction as the outside and not to the opposite direction.
It's not a big deal, I was just wondering if there is a good reason for that.

Take a look at this screencast, taper has the same effect on all the shapes. It tapers them so they either get thinner or thicker it's no different for an open or closed shape.

Okay, I see what you mean. It could have been nice to have to check marks to choose from, a Tapper and a Draft. But this is for the Idea station 😉

Thanks for clearing it out!

Ben.

I've been facing exactly the same issue. I wanted to make a simple hollow tapered extrusion from a circle or a rectangle. Basically a hollow thin walled tube shaped like a cone or a megaphone. It seem fairly obvious that a simple option to allow the inner and outer taper angles to be equal or opposite would cover this? Or ideally allow independent angles to be set...

Meantime I found a method do this is take a different course... ie. first sketch a circle with diameter of the outer part of the tube. Extrude it with taper. Then make another sketch in the same plane as the first, with diameter of the inner surface of the intended tube, extrude it and taper - choosing to "cut" the existing body created in the first operation. This is a lot like using a boolean operation in Max. It's just a pity the simpler operation, temptingly offered by tapering an extrusion, is not possible - or rather is fairly limited...

That post was addressing Ben, highlighting that it is a 2 step process,

I did see that you had sorted out one way to do it, exactly, with two extrudes.

There are many ways to model your object, Revolve, Extrude / Shell, and in Patch area, taper extrude or Revolve, with thicken.

No right or wrong, often depends on the design work to follow from these building blocks.
