Imported curves become base feature

I've been able to import some line work and each profile comes in as a separate sketch. These sketchs can then be edited with the sketch tools, unless I turn on history, then they all become base objects and are no longer editable. The idea is to have the option to make changes to the sketchs later in the designs process

How is this to be done?

So you say - but in the sc it seems I cannot. That is to say I can't even get into the sketch mode trying to activate the imported sketches. What am I missing this time?
