Short answer, away from Fusion till tomorrow,

create a plane, that goes through the model where you want it.

use the plane to split the body in two halves.

create a sketch on that same cutting plane, and Project intersect the body profile into the sketch.

in the sketch you offset the lines produced for the body, by say 25 - 30 mm, outwards.

you should have a curved strip around the cut line of the body, that can be Extrude > join to each body by the thickness required.

Another offset line for the line of bolt screws, in the middle of the band.

should get you going.

I am trying to make an ankle cast for my girlfriend. I have a high quality .stl file from a Creaform scanner I use at work. I was able to use the .stl of her ankle along with the spline tools to create a solid model for printing on a 3d scanner. The problem I have is editing the body of the model to create a seam for bolting this boot together. I would like to add a 5mm wide seam up the front and back of this boot, then use a plane to cut the boot in half down the center of the seam so it can be put on. The seam would then be used to run small bolts through it to clamshell it all back together. I have only been doing 3d modeling for a couple days and I am now lost at this point. Any help would be great.

er.

I was just about to answer when Dave beat me to the reply button. Dave’s response is good, and here is an alternate method that uses the Sweep command:

To split the body, I would normally create an “Offset Plane” in the Construction menu, and make that plane align with one of the axis, then just slide the plane to the middle where I want the split to occur. That method really depends on how your model is oriented though. Let me know if you need to any help creating this plane, I can suggest a few different methods.

Next you need to actually split the model using the new construction plane. This command Modify > "Split Body", which is in the modelling workspace. You will end up with 2 bodies. Disable the visibility of one of these bodies using the lightbulb icon in your component browser.

Before you can create the seam, you need one more thing, which is the profile/shape you want the seam to take. First, select Construct > “Plane Along Path”, then select the outer edge of your cast (see image). Notice that if you slide that plane by dragging the arrow, that plane follows the profile you selected. Next create a sketch on that plane, and sketch the profile that you want to use for the seam. Suggestion: it is usually best to make the sketch intersect your body a little, instead of trying to connect it exactly to the edge (see image). This helps prevent any unwanted gaps later on.

Now you can create the seam. This can be done with the Create > Sweep command. All you need to do is select the profile (the sketch you just made), and the path (the outer edge where you made the body split). If your sketch intersects the body, then the default operation is usually Cut. Change this to Join.

That should be it. Toggle the body visibility and do the same for the other half. Lastly, enable visibility of both halves, and create a sketch on the swept profile where you want the holes for your bolts to go through.

I hope I understood your question correctly. Let us know if there is anything else you need help with.

Thanks,

Joe
