Sketch - Rect Pattern is not updated if direction vector is changed. Bug?

So, I created Rectangular pattern in sketch and specified direction for it. If I then change direction angle the pattern is not updated. Compute All does not work either. The only way to update it is to open that pattern for edit and simply press Ok button. Therefore, the pattern constraint remembers which line is used for direction vector, but simply does not update itself if that line is changed. It's very annoying if direction line was projected from other sketch, because it requires manual rechecking of patterns constraints (as even there is no any warning about it).

Also I noticed that the similar feature (Rectangular Pattern) for 3D objects works as I expected (updates itself if direction line was changed).

The another question: How to re-select direction line for existent pattern constraint? I can't see any appropriate field in its properties dialog (as it usually can be found in many other feature parameters dialogs).

I played around with this a bit and found another oddity. If you select the path first then the objects to pattern click OK then draw a line from the start of the path curve the pattern icon turns red.

@HughesTooling Yes, that's odd. I also reproduced red icon. But it seems depend on many factors: selection order, rectangle position, updating direction. And even with the "right" sequence it becomes unreproducible since some time.

But, when I tried to play more with it your "oddity" I've found even more weird stuff.

@Anonymous Yes I saw that as well, I tried to get it in my screencast but couldn't get it to go wrong. Just tried again and get it all the time!

@HughesTooling So, then it seems the red icon appears when pattern failed to do that weird contour-profile discrepancy. 🙂

I am digging this thread out just because I now, a year later, also suffer from this issue. I built stairs along a line and have the model parameterized. When I change the stairs dimensions, the change of the angle of the direction does not update the rectangular pattern until you double-click-open it and press Ok.

I attached my stairs file. Just play around with the parameters "Gesamthöhe" and "Gesamtlänge" - which are the german words for overall height and overall length. Those should just update the stairs sketch.

Edit: Even worse: The rectangular pattern always jumps back to the first value it ever had when I modify the sketch.

As so often mentioned: Prefer feature based patterns over sketch based patterns. More stable and faster.

I have altered the methodology as you have suggested and works.

Makes the sketch patterns pointless though.

I wouldn't say "pointless".

You should rank techniques in an ordered list of priority.

Example, Extrude or Revolve over Sweep.

Sweep over Loft.

That doesn't mean that Loft is pointless.

Use the best technique for the Design Intent.

Usually, Pattern Feature is a preferred technique over Pattern Sketch elements, but there are times when Pattern Sketch elements is the best technique for the Design Intent.

BTW - these general rules of technique hold true across multiple different MCAD softwares.
