Well, i've seem to run into an issue here - fairly new CAD user and i've created a nice little model (its basically a tall egg with a flat bottom and some rectangular cut outs for cable management) and i have no idea how to hollow it out so that it's not just a cylinder of emptiness going up the middle of it but rather it's like an egg shell

All help is appreciated (im not sure if i gave you enough info yet though)

Thanks

You could also just make a duplicate of the shape INSIDE the egg and Combine them to make it hollow.

If the shell command does not work on the closed egg shape, then split the egg in two, shell, then re-combine the pieces.

Shell works on a solid sphere without splitting first, so it should work on an egg shape. I'm curious how the egg was created in the first place. I would have sketched the cross-section, then revolved it around the axis, but maybe I'm overlooking something.

The cutouts are probably causing the error. Can you do the shell operation before the cut out operations?

Posting the file will get you more help if this doesn't work.

the issue is that i've tried to do that (and btw i made the egg shape by making a sphere in form editing and elongating it and making it a bit thinner) but when i shell it, it doesn't work, it asks me to choose a form, i did, then when i drag the arrow up to shell it, and i make the entire shape blue (280mm) i click finish and a small part at the top is cut off - what is happening?

my models are all nice and hollowed out now, but, when i export as a stl for 3d printing, i can't export my 2 halves of the shell as 1 - how do i do this?

Save as Stl doesn't work for bodies, so make sure each half is a component or they are bodies in one component. There should be no other bodies in the component. It isn't necessary to join the bodies in order to create the stl file. Once they are both components, just right click in the browser to select them and export as stl. The 3d print menu item will do the same basic operation with a few other options.
