This makes no sense to me either. The sketch origin should be based off of either the component origin, the global origin (if not in a component), or some other geometry reference that was used in the creation of the sketch plane. Right now it appears to be arbitrary and therefore non-deterministic, meaning that it could potentially change at any time. Obviously that's not what you want for a parametric modeler.

Why when creating a new Plane, the new Plan's origin is NOT centered with the Root Component's Origin!?

Gooday Ben,

Few things spring to mind,

Planes themselves don't have any visible geometery or Origins on them, but you can resize them, click and drag the corner of the plane and the other stuff will not move.

you say that new plane has a Mid point constaint on the origin of the plane as you put it, nope, just a coincidence.

might help.....

@Beyondforce:

I never noticed this before, but I see what you mean. What you really want, is that the origin of the new plane should be at the projection of the root component origin, and not in any way referenced to the geometry used when the plane is created?

Not sure if that's what everyone would want. If you create an offset plane to some face of a body, the origin of the new plane seems to be at the projection of the center of an imaginary bounding box of the geometry used to create the plane. For a plane at an angle to a line, the center is at the midpoint of the line, as far as I can tell.

Planes normally have there centre at the centre of the geometry they're created from. In your case I guess you used an axis so it's length is not fixed and I guess an arbitrary size is used. If you make a sketch and constrain the midpoint of a line the the origin than the origin of the new plane will be the origin. Perhaps using an axis from the document or component should be a special case and the new plane should use the origin the axis relates to, don't forget you can create an axis from geometry so the mid point can be quite random.

There is something amiss with this whole thread,

I use planes of all types, and when I click on a plane for a new sketch, my plane is consumed and no longer visible from that point onwards, (my default behaviour)

unless you go back and make it visible again, I didn't see Ben do that. Same as a sketch is consumed by the first feature.

Ben, to prove a point,

new filw, create a plane on angle from an Origin's axis, before you do anything else, turn off the Origin visibility, and describe to me where the planes origin is.

i think you are asking about a create sketch annomoly, nothing to do with the plane presentation. When I create a sketch with a visible Origin, it's there, but I won't use a grid either.

So I figure the grid, is aligning to the plane presentation, not the origin, but the plane should be consumed by now, as I say something is amiss.

My 2 cents.

@Beyondforce:

I see your point, but I'm not sure what the real problem is. The origin is always automatically projected into any plane, and can always be used as a reference. That said, I see no good reason why the plane center point couldn't just as well have been at the projection point of the root component origin.

But nevertheless, the current behaviour means that relying on the plane center point as a reference may not be a good idea.

Have you tried projecting an axis into a sketch? I don't know why but they've decided a component axis is 20.75mm long 1.75mm from the origin. If you create a plane from a component axis the origin of the sketch will be the midpoint of that line. Like I said maybe the component origin axis should be treated differently but this is only a problem creating angled planes at the origin, if you want to create one anywhere else you'd need to create some geometry to control where it origin is.

@JamieGilchrist:

Ok, but the default origin is actually auto-projected into the sketch (you can reference it with any sketch geometry), it's just that it isn't projected as the center point of the construction plane/sketch.

But I agree that it would be better if it was also projected as the center point (like @Beyondforce wants), so if that's what will happen with some later update, then great! 🙂

correct. the autoprojection is there for referencing, but in this particular case the projected origin should be drawn as the center of the sketch. This behavior exists today on sketch planes that are non planar to the default planes, it seems that this was missed in the case of the plane at angle on the default axes.

this image shows that the default origin is auto-projected and drawn in the sketch plane. The same behavior should follow in Ben's case.

I've just recently discovered this issue myself when using Plane at Angle. My work around right now is to first sketch on a default plane, then rotate the sketch to the desired orientation with the Move command.

Just wondering if this was ever fixed back in 2017 or is this a recurrence of an old bug?

(currently using version 2.0.4343)

Regards,
Clive

I've been setting a reference plane that is at angle in the X plane, but the sketch origin point has moved upward in the Z direction, ie along the rotation line.

Is this a bug?

Hey guys,

Almost year 2020 - this is still not fixed. This is very annoying bug.

For example. I just started to put a plane at offset from a face, created sketch on that plane, then a body and after an hour of hard work I just realised that it is missaligned due to this offcenter bug.

In my opinion it is the most critical issue in this software. Please understand how many hours any constructor (like me) wasted because components were missaligned due to this.

Thank you. Best regards,

Krzysztof

Thank you Jamie,

I'm currently using Fusion 360 version 2.0.7036 and this bug appears to still be present.

If I make a new design, then select Construction --> Plane at Angle then select the Y axis as the line and set it to 10 degrees for instance, it will create a new plane at a 10 degree angle to the XY plane (good so far), but the origin of the new plane is not coincident with the actual origin of the drawing. It will have its own origin offset an arbitrary amount from the base origin (in my case this was 12.125mm and I have no idea why).

I believe the default behavior when creating a plane at an angle to one of the origin axes should be to use the same origin point as the base drawing for the new plane by default. Possibly there could be an option to offset the origin of the new plane if desired in the future.

Thanks again!
-Sam
