Not sure if it's changed but you can only select curves so you need to project in the edge. There are setting for auto projection in preferences, I have both turned off and see the same as you, maybe enabling them will allow selecting an edge.

The pattern available on the create menu for solids and surfaces does allow edge selection so that might cause some confusion.

Issue: Selection of Direction for Rectangular Pattern in a Sketch

I'm trying to create a rectangular pattern in a Sketch. When I click on the Direction, I thought I used to be able to select an edge in the model to choose a direction. Now I can select a face in one direction, but I can't select a face for the other direction, and the edges are not working for either direction. See attached Screencast. You'll see I was able to create the intended pattern by manually entering the data. The end of the Screencast is the final pattern I was trying to achieve. I'm just used to clicking on an edge to choose the Direction.

Thanks Mark, I am probably confusing it with the solids like you mentioned. I also have Auto Projection off.

The behavior still seemed inconsistent in that selecting the right face of the solid chose the direction, as seen in the Screencast where the pattern was created in the undesired direction. The pallet still didn't register that a direction was selected.

When you select the face you are selecting a distance for whatever direction arrow is active. I guess the part is 36mm wide so you got a distance of 18, the base point being the centre of the selected objects.
