"Look at" in sketch palette incorrect view (bug?)

In my current project, I came across a weird bug (I think). In one sub-component I created a midplane and then started a sketch on that plane. The view was then correct (i.e normal to the sketch plane). However, if I press the "Look at"-button at the top of the sketch palette, the view rotates to some oblique angle to the actual sketch plane instead of the normal view.

This was quite annoying, although I could work around it by using the "Look at" button at the bottom of the screen and then pointing to the construction plane I used for the sketch.

Another weird issue is that if I use the "Slice" button in the sketch palette, and then leave that button checked when I exit the sketch, the slice stays active. This seems to be true for any sketches in any component... 😞

I fear that there is somehow a corruption in the design data. I've also done "Compute all" many times (no errors), but the problem persists. I cannot share the design, so I'm asking if anyone has experienced similar issues?

That certainly sounds like a bug. It looks like the "Look At" feature works OK for simple cases, so this could possibly be a case where the problem is data-specific. Could you share your design, and also a screencast of what you are seeing?

I've seen both of these problems and it's usually caused with a component that's positioned with a joint at an angle. I've attached a file with the problem and a screencast, just edit the last sketch on the timeline. The sketch was created on the components XZ plane after applying the joint.

@jeff_strater Another problem I've noticed in this situation is the grid is also rotated, is that what's expected? I've attached another version of the file above with a construction plane and sketch added, when the sketch is edited the grid is rotated like this.

Thanks for confirming that you've seen this, and for providing examples. Should make it easier for Autodesk staff to look into it, as the "Look at"-button for a sketch should work correctly no matter how the component has reached it's current position.

@jeff_strater:

As I mentioned, I don't want to share my design publicly, and now since @HughesTooling provided simple examples you should have something to work on. Should the need arise I could share my design privately with you (or other Autodesk staff), though.

Thanks, @HughesTooling, those are indeed bugs, and the missing info from my simple case: a rotated component. I swear this used to work, but I could be wrong. Anyway, I'll enter it and get it looked at. Thanks for the help.

This is actually extremely annoying, so please try looking at it rather quickly. It isn't uncommon to move and rotate components in a large design, and not being able to quickly get the normal view of the sketch is cumbersome, since one has to "Look at" the source plane for the sketch instead. This one can't be too difficult to fix, can it?

When using combine cut (under similar circumstances as above) the cut preview (the red transparent ghost) is also not where it should be in space. The operation does succeed though, so it is just a visual bug. I've modified Mark's example and attached it here. Open the design, and then edit the combine feature (at the end of the timeline). You'll see this:

The ghosted cut body is shown in the wrong location.

Here's another case where Look At is failing to show the correct view. A plane at angle (97.5 degrees) was created on the Y axis. Sketch 2 was created on the plane. Selecting Look At from the sketch context menu rotates the view on the Z axis as well as the Y axis. Selecting the plane and the Look At icon at the bottom of the workspace rotates the view even more on the Z axis.

Doing some housekeeping over here, and noticed we never followed up on this one. The problem with incorrect preview for combine cut has been fixed and released recently. If you notice any new problems with combine and cut previews, please post them as new posts on the Support page.

This definetly looks fixed,I ran into it all the time making multicavity mould tools and noticed the last update fixed it. One situation where it still shows or at least a similar problem shows is if you have Show Dimensions enabled and edit a dimension on a moved component, the dimension is shown in it's original place.

You can see here what happens when I double click the 40mm dimension!

@HughesTooling Got the file, I see the issue. It only happens when you are editing sketch dimensions outside of the sketch, and the sketch is on a transformed (moved) component. Joints have nothing to do with it other than they can move components around. (If you edit the sketch, the view rolls back to where the sketch was made, prior to the move)

This is more of a convenience suggestion on the topic.

Notice the viewcube. I would like to be able to rotate the selected face so that the model is horizontal.

The suggested solution:

A gumball that controls the camera as it still is in the "look at" mode. It could make the workflow more convenient.
