Hi All

I am having a bit of a struggle with JOINTS:

I have attached a STEP and PDF to this post.

I need to align Axis B with Plane D, pivot Plane B on Axis A and align Plane E to Plane A.

Many thanks

Is there anyting in this assembly that is suppoed to move os is ot going to be joined rigidly ?

If so, what you're asking for canbe achieve with a single rigid joint.

Please attach your assembly as a .f3d fle as that is the native Fusion 360 file format.

Hi Peter. Thanks for your help.

The front of the Tack Rail slides up and down on the plane of the Front Seat Block - which is correct, but I also need the plane on the under side of the Tack Rail to Pivot on the Front Seat Block where I have positioned it (like a see-saw). It should not to be rigid yet as, later on, the Tack Rail will need to also align itself to a part that will be added at the other end of the Tack Rail from the Front Seat Block.

I have uploaded a simple model for this

Thanks again

Before continuing you should familiarize yourself with Fusion 360's R.U.L.E #1. That avoids several of the pitfalls that your design already shows. It has nothing to do with the joints you want to create but will help you down the road with "real" designs.

What is your goal with this design ?

the reason why I am asking this is the the joint system in Fusion 360 is designed to work like real-world joints. As your design has not components that would make a real physical mechanical system work as you describe you have a bit of a time picking the right joints. What you started with the pin-slot is correct.

If you want to continue with your design and make something real, then it is too early at this time to join components.

Hi Peter

Thanks again for your response.

The 'end' goal is to establish whether or not Fusion 360 is a viable CAD software for the large sofa manufacturer that I work for. So at the moment it is just a case of trying out a few small scenarios and see how things go. Other than this problem that I am having with constraining, all is working out well.

I will read up on RULE 1 and create another drawing later today.

Thanks

For that purpose trials like this are meaningless, because they don't reflect real/world use cases. I say this with 30 years of design and engineering under my belt with 27 years of CAD experience.

Take a real project maybe even a challenging one and give Fusion 360 a really long good evaluation and try to fully complete that to the same level you work with your "other" CAD solution.

Peter, you are absolutely correct and I do plan on a full project. However, I need to understand some 360 basics first.

There is another project going on to establish the viability of the software for the company, but for a different purpose. There's is more Top-Down, whereas mine is Bottom-Up.

Looking at other peoples posts I will probably use an ALIGN/MOVE then a RIGID joint to solve the 'Multiple Joint (axis to plane)' issue.

Cheers

Yes, a single rigind joing can replace the geometric contraints you maybe more used to in other CAD systems.

Looking into this further I am not sure that JOINTS is going to be the right method to constrain parts in the type of modelling that I will be doing. In some cases, having to move things into place and then add a rigid joint, or having to draw extra sketch geometry, feels too labour intensive. Maybe I just need a better understanding of the JOINTS capability.
